My first zero-star review is up over at the NYT. Made three visits to Golden Steer and while you can theoretically have a good time if you stick with salads and oyster shooters, the steaks are massively, profoundly disappointing messaging-custom-newsletters.nytimes.com/dynamic/rend...

Steak Is Only Getting Pricier in 2026 Plus: A visit to Confidant, and price hikes at Cote, The Eighty-Six, Wild Cherry, Atla, Skirt Steak, and elsewhere

I can't remember the last time I saw the price of steak going up at so many New York restaurants. And the Iran war could push things up even further.... www.thelotimes.com/p/steak-beef...

Here's my NYT review of El Gauchito in Elmhurst, an Argentinian steakhouse that's been around since the late 1970s! It's still packed: quoted wait time was 45 mins a few Saturdays ago and people were spilling out the door! messaging-custom-newsletters.nytimes.com/dynamic/rend...

I actually fully believe that New York traffic is worse than LA traffic, because while LA traffic is godawful, it’s predictable. New York traffic pops up out of nowhere, like mushrooms. If you have to drive or be driven in NYC, you will never be able to accurately figure out how long it will take.

a1 was maybe my fave condiment as a kid? so tangy and zippy in a household where "acidic" or "tart" were not regular flavor profiles!

A big takeaway this year has to be that Sinners and One Battle After Another were big, artist driven, swings bankrolled by WB whose future is ultimately unclear. I like living in a world where people like PTA and Ryan Coogler get to make the films they want to make with those resources.

go do yourself a favor and watch delroy as a struggling jazz musician and father in spike lee's heartbreaking "crooklyn." and you know what go watch him in — i kid you not — "the core," a wonderfully pulpy sci-fi b-flick that everyone sleeps on lol

could go either way for a lot of them but my chief ballot is for delroy lindo every day of the week for most of his earlier films but especially for "sinners"

For most of my childhood my mom was a researcher at Entertainment Weekly and worked in their massive library of other magazines reporters were constantly referencing. We lose so much when reporters, or anyone else, can't access that history.

This may seem tertiary to more important conversations but I think a lot about food/travel writing right now that touts restaurants or activities you should specifically travel for without acknowledging if those destinations are in places trans and queer people can't safely travel

With the Olympics done, my time at The Post is also done. It’s been an amazing five-plus years. The people I worked with weren’t just supremely talented, they were also great humans. This was truly a dream job and I’m eternally grateful I got this opportunity.

And I’ll be keeping my WaPo subscription because while what happened was horrific and nonsensical, there are still great journalists in that building doing essential work. This country needs them, especially in these times.

one of my favorite things about the olympics is that it's the one big deal sporting event where we don't have to listen to a band, organist, or loudspeaker play "seven nation army" every 17 minutes lol
