If we want cumulative theory, valid measurement, and interpretable findings, conceptual precision is not optional.
• Is state self-control about attempts—or actual performance?
• Should all goal conflicts qualify—or only those involving affectively charged response tendencies?
• Is self-control reducible to temporal discounting or cognitive control?
Preprint just accepted by Motivation Science! osf.io/preprints/ps...
Despite decades of research, we do not have a clear or unitary definition of self-control!
In this article, I discuss:
• Is self-control an ability or a personality trait?
• Should habits count as self-control?

Collaborating on this was fun - and it shows that research stays - in addition to their immediate impact- can still promote collaboration and productivity 15 years later! Thank you @liztenney.bsky.social for asking me to join the team!
Meet Veronika, the tool-using cow. Veronika uses sticks to scratch herself, using different orientations and motions, an example of multi-purpose tool use. This suggests scientists may have underestimated cows' cognitive abilities. arstechnica.com/science/2026...

New paper! Miriam Pfister, Melanie Naumann, Veronika Brandstätter and I validated 13 state scales to capture change in students' affect, learning experiences, and study-related appraisals during exam preparation - useful tools to investigate the processes driving academic success.
Intergoal facilitation, commitment, and value did not predict much or anything. We would be happy if more people used our measure to learn more about its predictive validity. Here is the preprint: osf.io/preprints/ps... (before proofs, might differ slightly from the final, published version).
It measures 9 goal dimensions. Some results: Demand, enjoyment, expectancy, and progress predicted subjective and exam performance as well as subjective well-being; external motivation and (perceived) support predicted only (aspects of) subjective well-being.
New paper with Korbinian Kiendl, @rhoyle.bsky.social & @kkleinke.de accepted at Motivation Science: After noticing that practices for measuring characteristics of personal goals (= goal dimensions) are a big mess (see Kiendl et al., 2022), we decided to develop and validate a measure: ...
1. I have spent a lot of time recently sending invitations for people to review papers, and this process works extremely differently from what I imagined when I was a student. Wanted to write out how I do it in case that's helpful for you all as you submit papers.

Self-control in daily life is more than willpower — but how well do commonly used trait scales capture this recent, broader view on self-control?
