I built a light box Sometimes, we discount experiences, places, and even people, because of how they look at first glance. We sometimes judge things as "less than" because of that first impression, but we should take care to remember that beautiful end results can come from some pretty humble beginnings.

The Holmes Clan (Part 2) Although [the Holmes brothers] told all their investors that the stock would be listed on the NYSE within 30-days, they never even made an application for it to be listed. They lied, bold-faced, to the people they were extracting money from. Guess what happened next? (you know this, trust me): "When the victims complained about not realizing from their investments or questioned their value they were told that they did not have the right mental attitude and were promptly given peace-of-mind treatments." (p. 53, High & Low Financiers)

Just a little “fix” I watched a video the other evening where Elise Rose (she has a crochet channel on YouTube) did a review on Premier Yarn that can be purchased at Dollar Tree stores. I have passed the yarn bins at Dollar Tree for YEARS - certain that the yarn wasn't worth my time - but Elise assured everyone that she was pleasantly surprised, and recommended that we try some and see what we think.

The Holmes clan (Part 1) The most difficult part of the stock-selling racket is acquiring the confidence of the buyers. The brothers (including Ernest) were quick to see the advantage Fenwicke would have in the game. With his clerical background, his convincing manner, and the faith his followers had in his teachings, it would be an easy matter for him to sell their stock. If he could sell them on the idea that a broken leg could be cured by prayer, the power of suggestion, or "truth thinking", he could also sell specious stock in ephemeral gold mines. Fenwicke thought so too

The truest thing I’ve read today….🤣

I’ve been knitting & crocheting to manage anxiety about the global situation. Let’s face it - there are worse coping mechanisms!! ☺️

My head snapped when he started talking about the rescue. He was babbling about things that aren’t (well, weren’t prior to his verbal diarrhea) public knowledge.

Good grief 🤦‍♀️

The joy of colorful distractions The news cycle sure is crazy right now, and my favorite way to engage in "avoidance behavior" is to crochet, knit or sew, while binging something (unrelated to the news, of course) on TV. Lately I've been watching old Columbo episodes. It's somewhat funny, since the start of that TV series coincided with the Arab Oil Embargo, "stagflation" and other disruptive economic shenanigans of the early 1970's.

A shopping hack The other day I found myself "itching" to shop for yarn or fabric. I had a period of time (lunch hour) and a quilt shop within driving distance. I put the address into my GPS and headed out (10-minute trip). As I drove, I was having a conversation in my head asking myself about the PURPOSE of my trip.

Life’s simple pleasures I periodically go off on a tangent as it relates to a craft - especially knitting or crocheting projects. I recently came across an item from one of these “projects” as I was cleaning out and organizing some space. The piece I found tonight, a crocheted drawstring bag (pictured below) was empty and I was a little sad that it was just sitting there, unused.

Looking for leaders with backbone and ethics Spiritual groups that are interested in creating a "world that works for all" might want to revisit anointing or credentialing people whose political views are promoting this unfolding global disaster - even if it means losing some revenue. Taking a step back from that "drastic" move could even look like an aligned statement from the Home Office - and required for all leadership - that the movement stands for peace, truthfulness, integrity, and respect for ALL human life, AND that they will not tolerate anyone in a credentialed or leadership role who continues to warmonger, make excuses for warmongers or engages in similar behavior. Now is the time; this is the right thing to do, but I doubt if any of them have the backbone to stand up this straight and tall.

My fiber refuge The news cycle lately isn't very comforting to anyone, but I am feeling a particularly angst-ridden as a Veteran, because I can feel - in the depths of my being - the great terror being experienced by families across this country (USA) who are impacted by the reality of a troop deployment into a war zone. For those never having served, I think that the context of being at the mercy of someone else might be an abstract concept.

A new skill As the Xmas portion of this holiday season draws to a close, I find solace in quiet evenings on the couch, Xmas music in the background, tree on and looking festive, cat at my side, feet up, and yarn work in my hands. Too soon I will reenter the work week shuffle, along with the stress and time commitments it brings. For now, though; I will enjoy the solitude of yarn and downtime. It creates a healing space and offers a terrific way to close out the Xmas holiday.

Scraps to the rescue Among the gifts with the most commentary this year, my VERY last minute lavender eye pillows took the prize, which is hilarious after all my bluster about stashbusting. My tendencies to not donate, give away, or throw out any crafting supplies saved me this year!!

Last-minute gifts that make the grade Some of the most challenging gifts to give are those for friends or colleagues that we feel close enough to that we want to give them a gift at Christmas, but we aren't close enough to know where to begin in choosing a gift. We also may struggle with balancing not spending enough or overdoing it. Thankfully, the walls of gift cards available at many stores make this a one-stop shopping trip for all our casual gifting needs.

History repeats (will we ever learn?) What I do know is that as this technological tidal wave rolls in, it is going to be super important to have strong networks with others. We should also be honing or learning skills around fixing things instead of buying new; growing and preserving food; pivoting to reuse practices instead of always buying new; and perhaps MOST important: work on SAVING as much money (cash) as we can, eliminating debt, and dialing back on our mindless spending.

My fiber-year in review I chose the featured photo (top of page) as it best reflects my thoughts on the past year, or at least the year since January 21st. In many ways, my sewing, knitting, and crocheting have helped me stay sane in a world that seemed to begin to fall apart around that time.

Holiday Self-Care ...we cannot give from an empty vessel. For many people, this has meant waiting for OTHERS to fill them. That’s a dicey proposition, and in many ways sets us up to fail. Caring for ourselves, even in small ways, is as close to a sure thing as it gets.
