I don't think player quality is a one dimensional thing, we've spent our money on runners(not terrible players imo!) but could have been much more fine if we spent a little less money but on more competent passers in midfield, without them needing to be world beaters at it.

(and I am convinced already they're due a firing yesterday)

I dunno, I think the amounts haven't been the issue. Plenty of expensive players bought, given high wages, not enough of them who can pass a ball. I assume Lange would set the brief for the type of player we'd look for, if not then Vinai is running this club even worse than I thought.
