This week we hosted the WSL hydro day ๐ฆ in Davos. Four hydrology groups within WSL contributed to this gathering. This event nicely highlights the diversity of hydrology, evidenced by the wide spectrum of topics covered within the three hours.
We look forward to gathering again next spring! ๐ ๐

We warmly welcome our new postdoc researcher Dr. Ahmed Elkouk. He aims to investigate floods under climate change to support the development of sustainable adaptation measures in the Swiss Rhรดne River. Outside research, he finds peace in reading and quietly watching the flow of a river.
Switch flipped for conditions conducive to #fire: Dry #weather + low #humidity are the main driving forces behind #forestfires, with #temperature playing less of a role. #Wind + a lack of #snow encourage forest fires in #winter.

Our Perspective by Amber van Hamel and colleagues @cchartierrescan.bsky.social @mariagrundmann.bsky.social @manuelaibrunner.bsky.social emphasizes that climate change will worsen riverine heatwaves, demanding better data and models to address them.

Join our new #EGU26 session on โFreshwater Temperatures: From Local to Global Scalesโ from 3 to 8 May 2026, on-site in Vienna and virtually!
We ( @manuelaibrunner.bsky.social , Michelle van Vliet, Felipe Saavedra, James White, and myself) invite abstract submissions to our session HS2.3.3!
Are you working with #watertemperatures in freshwater systems?
Are you doing field work, modelling, large-scale analyses, or catchment studies?
Are you studying natural and anthropogenic processes governing fresh water temperatures, and their implications on ecosystems and water resources?

We are thrilled to announce that #HYCLIMM member Raul Wood, together with WSL researcher @tobias-wechsler.bsky.social, got their WSL grant Snow2HyDro!
This project focuses on the adaptation needs from water resources, energy, and agriculture in the Alpenrhein.
Stay tuned!๐คฉ

๐ Low flows show mixed effects โ they can increase or decrease depending on local conditions.
๐๏ธ Reservoir constructions are often connected to changes in the mean flow โ but these changes are poor indicators for changes of extreme flows
#floods #alps #hyclimm #eth #iac #slf
Using data from before and after reservoirs began their operations, along with upstreamโdownstream comparisons, they found that:
๐ง Floods are generally smaller downstream of large reservoirs โ 2-year floods drop by ~40 % when reservoir storage exceeds one month of average flow.
How do reservoirs shape streamflow extremes in the Alps?
๐ New paper from our team!
In his latest study, our #HYCLIMM member Jonas Gรถtte and co-authors analyzed Alpine catchments to understand how (hydropower) #reservoirs influence #streamflow extremes.
