🇸🇩 SUDAN | 73,000 people have been newly displaced from Kurmuk, a border town in southeastern Sudan’s Blue Nile State near Ethiopia, after UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied fighters seized the city on March 24.

Displaced people are now seeking safety in the state capital, Ed Damazin, and surrounding areas where they are sheltering in schools, public buildings, and informal gathering sites.

The capture of Kurmuk is a significant strategic victory for the RSF, providing a corridor for fighters, fuel, and weapons from Ethiopia. It comes as a new report from the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab concluded with high confidence that military support to RSF is being facilitated via an Ethiopian National Defense Force base in Asosa, about 100 km away.

Analysts and local reporting from the Ayin Network, say the RSF and its ally, the SPLM-N (al-Hilu faction), could now advance north toward Ed Damazin, potentially opening a major new front in Sudan’s civil war.

Researchers studying fin, humpback, and minke whales in the Gulf of St Lawrence have found that the animals are eating more fish and less krill than they did in the past. Scientists say the shift could be a result of growing competition for prey as warming waters disrupt marine food supplies.
