While we're doing our "the problem with university teaching" takes, mine is that it should be more shocking that in basically every UK university, the crucial decisions about teaching and assessment are made centrally, by fiat, and are almost never guided by active teaching staff or subject experts.

In the UK academic recession, you will be at one of these stages since many unis buy the same cuts model from the same consultancies. It is always the same process:
*Talk of belt-tightening
*Incidental savings (e.g. printing, refreshments)
*Travel budgets cut
*Promotion freeze (1/4)

Couldn't agree with this more except the word 'unfortunately' - I think it's the best possible outcome right now. Union leadership needs to listen! There are lots of people making excellent points about why this wasn't going to work and they weren't being heard because the only option is STRIKE.
A letter from President Catherine Connolly to the trans community of Ireland, wishing them "warmest wishes" on TDOR. She also marks the 10th anniversary of the GRA 2015 and "reminds us that the work of safeguarding dignity and ensuring genuine inclusion remains ongoing."
@teni.bsky.social don't seem to use their bsky account so I'm posting this over here from their facebook because people should see it: one of the first things our new President Connolly did last week was write the community a letter for TDOR 🏳️⚧️

“As I speak, I am acutely conscious of the 165 million people currently forcibly displaced from their homes and countries due to war, famine and climate change. We cannot turn back the clock nor close our eyes to these realities.”
Don't ask me to explain but Dublin, Belfast and Cork are all autumn cities but Galway is a summer city.

They're not "protecting women". They're little servants of patriarchy and fascism that think they've a right to harass and attack anyone who doesn't fit their narrow, conservative view of womanhood and are delusional if they think the same gowls they're doing the legwork for won't come for them next
A pink background with a speech bubble that reads: The Politics of Categories
Categories used by the state to sort people into boxes are never neutral.
Some thoughts on the UK Supreme Court case ruling and the wider anti-trans campaign to narrow sex and gender categories in policy, data and law.
