While we're doing our "the problem with university teaching" takes, mine is that it should be more shocking that in basically every UK university, the crucial decisions about teaching and assessment are made centrally, by fiat, and are almost never guided by active teaching staff or subject experts.

We didn't bastardise the English language into "ye", "yiz", "youse" and "yousins" to have Irish people unconnected to the US or other places it's used in saying "y'all", unless you're referring to the town in Cork we've PERFECTLY ADEQUATE second person plural pronouns at HOME

In the UK academic recession, you will be at one of these stages since many unis buy the same cuts model from the same consultancies. It is always the same process:
*Talk of belt-tightening
*Incidental savings (e.g. printing, refreshments)
*Travel budgets cut
*Promotion freeze (1/4)

new article in British Educational Research Journal: bera-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/.... we ran focus groups with 42 teacher educators in England, showing how recent teacher education policy reforms are a system of administrative compliance which governs through fear and control.

Couldn't agree with this more except the word 'unfortunately' - I think it's the best possible outcome right now. Union leadership needs to listen! There are lots of people making excellent points about why this wasn't going to work and they weren't being heard because the only option is STRIKE.

Alice Sullivan’s latest government-funded report into sex and gender research is a masterclass in trying to turn anti-trans perpetrators into victims. /1

They're not "protecting women". They're little servants of patriarchy and fascism that think they've a right to harass and attack anyone who doesn't fit their narrow, conservative view of womanhood and are delusional if they think the same gowls they're doing the legwork for won't come for them next

A pink background with a speech bubble that reads: The Politics of Categories

Categories used by the state to sort people into boxes are never neutral.

Some thoughts on the UK Supreme Court case ruling and the wider anti-trans campaign to narrow sex and gender categories in policy, data and law.
