RIGHT ABOUT NOW I think I am going to cherish this moment and listen to the soundtrack π

Agreed! You think at least think a PlayStation Store release with no updates would be an option.
Colony Wars
(PlayStation β 1997)
This complex space flight simulator featured a branching campaign that moves forward even if you fail a mission on your way to one of six endings.

Ha! You are right. Defeated by punctuation! I never stood a chance π
Dude I know I loved seeing that you did! It really was. It gives me a King of Fighters meets proto Smash Bros feeling.
Those tunes are fantastic! I also appreciate that the Name Entry tune is Last Wave from Outrun.
You are correct! It was not their first ever, but it was the first one that was intended for the Saturn only, and did not have an arcade release.
I ended up having to shorten that statement a lot to fit into the character limit on Bluesky. It probably could have been worded better
Fighters Megamix
(Saturn β 1997)
Sega's first 3D fighter, created exclusively for the Saturn, mixed other games and even let you fight as the Hornet from Daytona USA.

Quake II
(PC β 1997)
Quake II wasn't intended to be a sequel, but a new game that could have been called Strogg, Lock and Load, or even Wor.

The engine Hudson Soft built for Bomberman 64 was later reused for the first three Mario Party games. A Bomberman sprite was even found in the Mario Party 2 code.

Age of Empires
(PC β 1997)
GameSpot described the game as "Warcraft with a hint of Civilization."
Turns out that combination was golden. Age of Empires sold 3 million copies worldwide by 2000, grossing over $120 million.

In 1997, common hard drives were around 1 to 4GB, which is like our 1 to 2TB drives now. That means Riven took up around 80% of a high-end HDD.
Today, that would be like a single PS5 game being 800GB in size.
For perspective, GTA VI might be around 200GB.
Riven
(PlayStation, Mac, PC β 1997)
Riven was released on 5 CDs.
Thatβs over 3 GB of data, making it one of the largest games on PlayStation at the time.

Sega had no issue releasing it on Saturn, and eventually Sony gave in.

MDK
(Multiplatform β 1997)
The confusion over what MDK stands for became a running joke. A planned toy line meant "Murder Death Kill" wasn't going to work, so Shiny kept the letters and changed the meaning whenever it suited them.

Need for Speed 2

EA dropped the Road & Track magazine license for this sequel and instead focused on having real high-end sports cars, including the McLaren F1, Ferrari F50, Ford GT90, and the Lotus Esprit V8.

This gameβs pace was a bit weird even then I think. I love listening to the soundtrack though!
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
(Nintendo 64 β 1997)
Before he was on the N64, Turok began as a Dell Comics hero fighting dinosaurs in the Lost Valley in 1954. Then, 43 years later, Acclaim put him in a cutting-edge FPS that sold over 1.5 million copies.
