Ancient DNA Reveals Twisted Roots of Syphilis Go Back 5,500 Years The first known outbreak of syphilis in Europe began at the turn of the 16th century, but on the distant continent of South America, the pathogen's history goes much deeper than that.

I learned about this dark side of syphilis when I took a history of medicine course. It is a remarkably resistant disease that brought armies to their knees and wrought tremendous societal damage.

Plot of life expectancy after Type 1 diabetes diagnosis, 1850-2025.

After the discovery of insulin in 1921, life expectancies go gradually from zero to seventy years.

Plot of life expectancy after Type 1 diabetes diagnosis, 1850-2025. After the discovery of insulin in 1921, life expectancies go gradually from zero to seventy years.

These are VERY rough estimates, but here's life expectancy after diagnosis of type-I diabetes over the past 150 years.

It was Banting and Best's discovery of how to isolate insulin in 1921 — not some fucking cooking class — that gave people including my daughter a new lease on life.

Original 1925 jacket cover of The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby
Here is a novel, glamorous, ironical, compassionate a marvellous fusion into unity of the curious incongruities of the life of the period which reveals a hero like no other one who could live at no other time and in no other place. But he will live as a character, we surmise, as long as the memory of any reader lasts.
"There was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life. ..
It was an
extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again?"
It is the story of this Jay Gatsby who came so mysteriously to West Egg, of his sumptuous er-tertainments, and of his love for Daisy Buchanan a story that ranges from pure lyrical beauty to sheer brutal realism, and is infused with a sense of the strangeness of human circumstance in a heedless universe.
It is a magical, living book, blended of irony, romance, and mysticism.

They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.

-FS Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, published 4/10/1925.

This isn’t a trade war against China and the rest of the world.

It’s an economic war against working class America.

Trump's Sentencing Was An Embarrassment To The Nation Sure, Donald Trump is officially a convicted felon, but his sentencing was such an embarrassment that even the judge pointed out that it wasn't normal.

this urge to launder rfk jr. as “just a guy who is right about a few things” is such a perfect example of how liberals are people who won’t take their own side in a fight

"Our immigrant population has almost doubled while our crime rate has halved....we seem to have attracted immigrants who, by and large, are prone to integrate and strengthen the social fabric."

Ear cropping, debarking, declawing and tail docking for aesthetic/convenience purposes should be illegal everywhere. It’s nothing short of animal cruelty. So incredibly fucked up.
