Field coil speaker by Zenith
Rescuing this old #Zenith field coil speaker with segments of hand-ripped *very* thin black wrapping tissue, thinned-out PVA glue, a brush and days of patience!
This model was built by #Operadio for Zenith. Pre-WWII. Operadio made their speakers in the early 1920s.
Recorded at 25 Prospect Ave. Hackensack, New Jersey. Currently home to an orthopedic sports clinic. maps.app.goo.gl/tG6EZmaYUjHT...
Scotch 111 magnetic tape
Love recording on #Scotch 111!
Of course, there's the whole thing about recording on #Ampex 456 (minus the stickiness) or #BASF SM468, or the #ATRmagnetics MDS-36, but there something about recording to Scotch 111 on my Ampex F-44 that brings me back to this acetate-backed tape.
Eastman Kodak tape reel.
This is an interesting reel. I've never seen one like it. From Eastman #Kodak. The tape is warped with age (and heat?).
That said, there's a "splicing block" directly built into it! Would it be useful? I don't know. But, it looks like somebody thought it would :-)
Dean Martin's album on tape
Everybody loves somebody...
Listening to this #DeanMartin classic on my #Akai GX-635D reel tape recorder. Circa 1981, made in Tokyo, #Japan by the Akai Electric Company Limited.
Cool! I have a pair of baby Advents...love those as bookshelf speakers.

AR-XA turntable
The very awesome AR-XA by Acoustic Research. Circa 1963, made in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
A well-engineered, simple turntable that my geeky mind loves. A set of simple and elegant solutions to the oh-so-many problems that turntables have.
Hats off to Mr. Edgar Villchur for the design!
and compact!
Inside view of Stellavox SP7
The organized insides of a Stellavox SP7. Pluggable architecture! Epoxy-potted unobtanium modules. This one runs on a steel spring belt as opposed to a rubber one. Somewhat noisy, but the spring takes up the vibrations from the drivetrain. Later units sported a rubber belt with a belt tensioner.
Indeed. Recording was his "side hustle", as the kids say :-) This sign is tucked away in the back of his engineering space, right by his in-house workshop.
Very cool article "Jazz off the Record" by @ethaniversonpiano.bsky.social
Also very pleased that it includes one of my photographs from my visit to Dr. Rudolph Van Gelder's "Van Gelder studio" in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, where many a Blue Note record (@bluenoterecords.bsky.social) were born.
Ferrograph Series Seven tape recorder
It's alive!
The #Ferrograph Series Seven. This is a quirky machine. It's been interesting looking into the guts and reading the manual.
I must say, it does help to read the manual on this one 😆
Provocative Percussion by Enoch Light. Vol 1 thru 4.
And now, to provoke you, Enoch Light style!
Four tape boxes for "Persuasive Percussion" by Enoch Light. Volumes 1 through 4.
Allow me to persuade you, Enoch Light style...😎
12AX7 vacuum tube
Twin heaters on a #RCA cleartop12AX7. The getter ring is on the side, so the top of the tube remains clear.

Very cool! I'm setting us some microk8s stuff right now...to run ollama :-)
The inner workings of the Akai "Standard" Terecorder. Circa 1958, made in Tokyo, Japan by the #Akai Electric Company Limited.
Rubber idlers are relatively ok. May need some sanding to improve friction. The rest of the mechanism is in excellent shape. Some cleaning and lubrication should do it.
Day-to-day grind is A-OK! I still have all my drafts 25+ years later, sitting is a couple of boxes in my office. I haven't had the heart to throw it all away. As yet :-) In fact, it's sometimes fun to rifle through the stack to find gems of frustration and joy!
Concord tape recorder 107S/A
The Concord 107S with its companion amplifier 107S/A. Circa 1965, made in Japan for the Concord Electronics Corporation in Los Angeles, California.
It was a warm day in San Francisco, but the workspace is looking cooler already!
#Ampex
Listening to Kirsten Edkins. On tape!
I recorded the album "Shapes & Sound" on tape for that special tape sound. It does sound marvelous on my Akai GX 635-D ❤️

Voltmeter and Ammeter from Sears Roebuck and Company.
Voltmeter and Ammeter in one. For measuring battery condition for very early radios. Circa 1913, "Made in USA" by the Sears Roebuck & Company.
My grandfather was born in 1920. This thing predates him! Simply so very cool ❤️

Dial shows 5PM
It's always 5PM somewhere! It sure is, on my Tandberg Model 3 tape recorder. Circa 1958, made in Oslo, Norway by the Tandbergs Radiofabrikk.
