It's never too late to stop using generative ai and get your brain back.

Every time I read a piece about somebody with an “ai-assisted editing process” I feel like I’m watching someone trying to intellectualize a deliberate choice not to think or concentrate

I was so surprised to hear that Alan Dershowitz was switching from Democrat to Republican because I thought he was already dead.

Donate to Help Katie Beat Her Tumor with Radiation Treatment, organized by Kara Jorgensen My dog Katie has been recently diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma … Kara Jorgensen needs your support for Help Katie Beat Her Tumor with Radiation Treatment

In 2 weeks, I need to pay the balance of Katie's radiation treatments. If anyone would like to share the post or chip in, I would be eternally grateful.

I kind of want to get the new Elizabeth Short book just for the dragging of other books about her murder that I've read. I love a strongly worded literature review.

I know about 600 ppl at the local renfair who would kill this guy in under 8 seconds in a swordfight where only he had a sword

the only picture you'll ever need when explaining "sea lions are what happened when bears decided they wanted to play in the ocean as a full time job"

Me: Okay! Time to work!
Brain: LADIES AND GENTLEMEN
Me: oh no
Brain: THE MOMENT YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR
Me: I thought we talked about maybe not doing this today—
Brain: TURN IT ON OR I DO NOT TURN ON
Me: ... *puts on Hamilton*
Brain: DUN DUN-DUN-DUN-DUN DUN DUN
Me: but my emails
BRAIN: HOW DOES A BA

This is the most incredible shit I’ve ever seen.

If you thought OH-58 drivers firing rifles and dropping grenades out of their cockpits was cool, wait until you get a load of Ukrainian pilots flying 1970s prop planes and blasting drones out of the sky.

I fucking love these crazy bastards.

ao3 authors are on the forefront of refusing to let ai change their style to prove they’re human and the numerous tags they’ve come up with to say ‘fuck ai, all my homies hate ai, you’ll take my em dashes from my cold dead hands’ is so delightful to me

"Your attempt at clawing toward a righteous way of insulting my work hasn't worked. Please try insulting the work better."

If someone is like "THIS BOOK IS SO BADLY WRITTEN IT MUST BE AI SLOP!!??" then you are in the somewhat mortifying, but ultimately quite funny position of getting to say that, no, it is in fact 100% human-generated.

Write as if AI does not exist. Em-dashes, series of three, whatever. If someone thinks you have written with AI, I dunno, whatever? You know you didn't. If an "AI detector" spits out that you did? You know you didn't. Those things ID Mary Shelley as AI sometimes.

To add to this excellent thread: AI detectors DO NOT WORK. At all. They are wildly unreliable, offering false positives and false negatives so much that if you are paying for one you are being grifted.

I would love to know how many of these dudes self-identify as nerds because anecdotally I don't find nerds regularly gamble as they understand the concept of statistics, and if they want to engage in risky behavior with dice they will do it not with craps but with a DM and four fellow adventurers

hi, mets expert here! this isn't funny. mets only do this when they're in extreme distress

Seriously. It should be so much easier. I pretty much only read nonfiction in paper.

Born to footnote, forced to endnote!

I know it is less economical. I know. I know it makes life harder with ereaders. I know. But all the knowing in the world will not make my heart want what it wants any less!

One of my copyediting hot takes (and I know, I KNOW) is that footnotes are way better and (I UNDERSTAND WHY, I REALLY DO) endnotes are just kinda sad. No one is going to love them. They know it. I know it. We sigh together.
