We need more traffic calming between Broadway, 12th, Cambie, & Main to prevent all this rat running by drivers along & across the 10th Avenue & Ontario Bikeways. It's dangerous for cyclists & pedestrians too. #311 @cityofvancouver.bsky.social 4/4

I saw several drivers ignoring the modal filters & driving the wrong way at 10th & Quebec, as well as drivers blocking Ontario St Bikeway because so many of them are rat running in the alley between 10th & Broadway. #311 @cityofvancouver.bsky.social 3/4

I had to yell again to avoid being hit HEAD ON by a driver who was bypassing the stopped traffic on Manitoba & going the WRONG WAY around the traffic circle AT me & a mom with her kids on a cargobike. Cars were backed up from *12th Ave to Broadway* on Manitoba. #311 @cityofvancouver.bsky.social 2/4

I rode along 10th Ave this morning around 9:15am; Cambie to Main was RIDICULOUS. Another cyclist & I both had to yell to avoid being hit by a driver running a stop sign at Alberta. He didn't look either way, or he would have seen our lights & bright clothing. #311 @cityofvancouver.bsky.social 1/4

I worry about the longer term effects on this generation who didn't start out with active travel as their default. There are psychological impacts of not knowing your area, not feeling like you're part of the world, not learning coping skills & resilience that come from childhood independence. 4/4

Why aren't more parents mad about all this time that's been stolen from us? Why aren't parents more angry that their kids can't have independent mobility? Do people think it's good for kids to be chauffeured about in cars? To get less exercise? To barely know how to navigate their neighbourhood? 3/4

& make no mistake, this is a recent phenomenon, in the grand scheme of things. My generation has had to do way more ferrying kids to & from school than previous ones. My mom never had to do this with any of the three of us. We always walked ourselves to school from kindergarten onward. 2/4

THIS. THIS. All day this!

I did the math: all the time I've spent ferrying my children to & from school because it wasn't safe for them to walk or bike independently amounts to EIGHT MONTHS. 5,400 hours.

It was 99% biking. I don't regret the exercise or the time with my kids, but it's a lot. 1/4

AGREED! Yesterday I was waiting at a stop sign to turn right onto Kingsway, which was backed up in the intersection. The driver behind me pulled around on the left & tried to pass me to turn right in the same intersection. I've had this happen a million times when cycling, but I was *driving*. WTF?

OMG, WHEW. I thought I'd misremembered him dying a few years ago. Thank you for confirming. 😝

If you do find a wealthy benefactor, shoot higher, ask for the GSD R14... 😉

Yay! They're just so bad in so many ways. Like, what Peter said about the u-lock difficulty. But even if you do have a flexible lock like a chain that fits through, there's only one point of contact for your bike to lean on, so it's much more likely to fall over.

Definitely a #WorstBikeRacks award for these, in the category of "Works better as a bollard"

When are we going to start allowing bike parking like this in Vancouver???

Oh, haha, that's what I saw! Scanning too fast & didn't notice it was Todd talking about Vancouver.

Are you subskeeting Vancouver or do you have an ex cop who lives 400km away from City Hall on council in Hamilton too?

Ah yeah, I heard those too. Better fireworks than gunshots, I guess?

Oh, are you in Vancouver? *Waves from East Van*

I think the *bare minimum* should be one secure bike parking space per bedroom. Plus visitor bike parking, & customer parking if there are street level businesses in, say, a mixed-use development.

Yeah, let's stop buying massive American style firetrucks & then designing our roads around those. European & Asian cities somehow make it work with much more compact trucks that don't require huge corner radii & wide lanes.
