"Rule two: if anyone does recognize me, or starts asking me questions, let me take the lead." I nod, and she gives me an insistent look, reiterating her point. "I mean it," she says. "You might not agree, but in some situations, I'd rather deny being a lesbian and just not have to deal with their yee-haw attitude." "Okay," I tell her. I consider for a moment, looking up the aisle of the plane. "Do you want me to act like a man?" I ask her. "While we're in Sunnyside?" If more people saw us as a man and woman together, it might make Grace more comfortable—less seen—during our stay. Grace clicks her teeth. "No!" she chastises. "I don't ever want you to pretend."
