"In the place of problem-solving technology, companies have jumped on successive bandwagons like NFTs, the metaverse, and large language models. What these all have in common is that they are not built to really solve a market problem. They are built to make VCs and companies rich"

The First WORLD FENCING LEAGUE is happening April 25th!!! I'M GEEKING!!!
Japanese engineers developed this "Sword Tip Visualisation" tracking technology specifically for this event that will make it so much easier for the average person to see what's going on!
I MUST WATCH THIS ENTIRE TOURNAMENT

Bluesky: <currently utterly fucked, nothing works>
bluesy engineer: <dusts off hand> well, that's fixed it! Now I will spend a few hours writing a blog post about how it is allll fixed!
pckt.blog/b/jcalabro/a...
(I got this from another post, but could not reply or quote, so.. yeah: good jorb bsky)
Bluesky has been well borked for nearly a day now. I can at least see posts now and again, tho sometimes I need to either wait or force reload.
Can I see replies: haha! no.
How about quotes? definitely not.
change to other feeds? unlikely.
Can I at least make a post complaining about it? unknown.
E-scooter time!
Weird, considering there was a recent Korean-Chinese study that came to the conclusion that art students who use genAI are more likely to show traits like narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism. And the study in general paints a bad picture of genAI users.

if you agree that we all need a bit of good news right now, you should back this so it gets to $100k.
otherwise, you’ll be rooting for bad news
why do you hate good news so much?
what is wrong with you?
THIS. IS. IT. The FINAL 24 hours of our Kickstarter. It's been the absolute ride of our professional lives and we can't thank you enough! There is also still A GIANT MOON about to COLLIDE WITH THE MAGAZINE. If we hit $100k, we CAN STOP THE MOON.
www.kickstarter.com/projects/con...
oh wow, so SHOCKING, "AI" doesn't exist actually (Apple paper proves LLMs can't math or think or understand a problem)
nitter.poast.org/heynavtoor/s...
Getting to $100k in this campaign would mean we can start creating longform videogames writing, beautifully illustrated, before the magazine drops later in the year. I don't know what the giant moon is doing !!!
OMG THERE IS ONLY TWO DAYS to GO until our Kickstarter campaign ends. We're so stoked with all the help so far but there seems to be a lunar body headed for our magazine so please help by pledging!!!!!!! If we get to $100K we can surely stop the Moon!

At this point I simply don't click through if it the headline is obvious clickbait. Sorry journo who wrote that article, it might be great, but the people writing your headlines are fuckheads, so I will learn about it elsewhere.
Title: Hunting for Easter eggs with Werner Herzog Panel one: Werner goes out looking for eggs saying “I despise this idiotic sanitized ritual, and yet I am unwilling to return home eggless” Panel two: Werner stands before an egg on the ground “The joy of discovery rings hollow against the monumental indifference of the universe” Panel three: Werner carries an egg “what, other than regret, can hatch from this empty chocolate vessel”
Happy Easter!
I Work Very Hard, And I Would Like To Try Cake By A Horse Hello. I am a horse. I work very hard at my job of being a horse. When humans say move the heavy thing, I move the heavy thing. When humans sit on top of me and pull on my head, I carry them where they want to go. The main food the humans give me is hay and oats. But I am thinking it would be nice to have a different food. I am thinking I would like to try cake. Yes, yes. Cake. I know all about it. When humans eat cake, it is in glad times. It is the food for a celebration, such as when a woman becomes 47. I have seen cake on the Fourth of July. When humans have a cake, they stand around it and clap hands and smile and say happy birthday at each other. Sometimes there are beautiful markings on a cake, such as balloons or a pink shape. Sometimes the top of a cake is on fire and a boy must blow on the fire with mouth wind. This is the scariest cake. I do not want this kind. But I will eat any other cake. Any cake that is not the fire cake that tries to kill the boy. Please understand: I do not get money for doing work. I do not get to go inside the house. All I am either doing my horse job or standing in my pen or eating food off the floor. I always do these things. But I have never once gotten cake and I would like it very much. I have noticed that human children get to eat cake. But I am bigger than the children. I am more helpful to the farm. Children do not move the heavy things like me or let anyone ride on them. And yet they get cake. Maybe the humans will realize this. Maybe they will say, "You know who deserves cake? That horse. That horse whose back we are always on." Every day I dream about what it will be like if I get to eat cake. Here is what will happen. First, I will walk to the cake and putt my nose at it like hrrfff to make and stomping my hooves to make sure it is not a snake. Then I will trot in a circle to show that I am a horse and I am large. After that, I will nuzzle the cake to …
The horse op-ed is an instant classic. I can't tell you how much joy this piece gives me.
It should be taught in every introductory writing class in no small part because the horse arguments are so compelling. "I have noticed that human children get to eat cake. But I am bigger than the children."

Summerfall is looking for a 3D character artist to assist us on a new prototype by sculpting a stylised character head and hair for a prototype, based on a Metahuman model. Interested? Send me your portfolio, via DM or email liam@summerfallstudios.com!
oh right, I forgot it is stupidest shit on the internet day. (which sadly lasts for like 48 hours because I am in Australia.)
See you all in two days when the stupid shit is hopefully over.
code for a function that matches negative keywords, such as "ffs" "horrible" "fuck you" "this sucks" "damn it" etc. and then sets a value to negative if found
thomas points out that claude code does "sentiment analysis" in the same extremely sophisticated way we did it in 2008 for the twitter zeitgeist tool we built for pepsico's sxsw experience
would love to see a thread of small practical pieces of advice developers just starting out or unfamiliar with a genre might not know!
I’ll start: if you’re using a tag-based system, don’t just give everything an individual tag—look for thematic groups where similar events can lead to same outcome
Good morning #godot feed. I keep this google doc in my back pocket, if you would like resources on how to learn Godot, please, by all means: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

For the 1,000th time: "AI" does not have agency and cannot think and cannot act.
Chatbots cannot "evade safeguards" or "destroy things" or "ignore instructions".

New: Wikipedia has officially banned AI-generated content. After months of heated debate and previous attempts to restrict the use of LLMs, volunteer editors accepted a new policy that prohibits using them to create articles for the online encyclopedia

A text image of a small part of the transcript of a conversation between Ari Shapiro and David Simon (Creater of 'The Wire') on a segment on NPR during the wirter's strike of 2023: Shapiro: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without AI, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had that tool to solve those thorny problems... Simon: What? Shapiro: ...Or saying... Simon: You imagine that? Shapiro: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over. Simon: I don't think AI can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level. Shapiro: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into AI and say, give. me 10 ideas for how to transition this. Simon: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.
And if you think this is just some BS meme image, you can listen to the man himself: www.npr.org/transcripts/...
a partially finished analytic 2D lighting solution, showing both the angular and radial component with a checkerboard pattern and color coding
I'm almost there it's so pretty!! 😭
this is the first time I've made extensive use of complex numbers in shader code, which has been fun!
it's an analytic 2D lighting system through piecewise conformal maps representing angular light/"sky" exposure, which means you get fully analytic penumbras!
I see SO MUCH of this kind of thing. People burning $5 in tokens and waiting 20 mins to do something that could be done with a 'find | grep | awk' or some other one-liner, and be done in a few ms for $0. With the added benefit that you don't have to flip a coin to see if it is going to lie or not.

Panel 1: Bob and Bob sit on a bench outside, one of them is using a laptop. The first Bob says, "Bob..." The second Bob continues typing, not reacting. Panel 2: The first Bob says, "I want to thank you for being such a good friend." The second Bob keeps typing, still not reacting. Panel 3: The first Bob pauses and asks, "Wait... are you using ChatGPT?" The second Bob continues typing, showing no reaction. Panel 4: The second Bob is now alone on the bench, looking surprised.
