#ds9
tbh ive acctually kinda struggled to get through ds9 bc some of the plotlines have been hard to watch and honestly a lot of the political elements feel regressive to me and piss me off. which considering most peoples opinions on it took me off guard lol
kind of not been massively posting on here but im nearly finished wirh ds9 and i think im gonna try and finish it today 🙂↕️
of any real superficial conflicts that were present in those earlt seasons. it makes for a much better dynamic when we do reach lineage and we see tom step up address b'elannas conceens and insecurities and really state that hes absolutely not going anywhere. (god i love lineage)
them having especially good writing. (I also really like their conversations workforce prophecy and endgame) but post drive there really is not those issues again. we only ever really see them talking, communicating and spending time together theres never that same miscommunication and theres lack
ESPECIALLY b'elanna, stopped getting as much focus as characters whilst other characters started getting WAY MORE) but post drive the writers kinda get their shit together and they do give them a lot more consideration as a couple and their writing. Like lineage is easily the foremost example of
really feels like them. like the marriage also should have been a seperate conversation entirely tbh. but i think they just wanted to get them to that point whilst not having to give them focus bc they clearly had favourites to write for (and it wasnt them) (like it really didn't help that they,
but like having it drag out all the way into s7 just shows this is exactly correct. a lot of the tine it kinda feels like the writers are just giving them a plot here and there to just make sure theyve written something for them. and such a lot of the time it feels kinda stereotypical and never
that she wants them to write stuff that works for them and us actually interesting (or its smth along them lines i would just add it but i really cba digging it up now lmao)
theres actually a quote from dawson in a interview in a magazine i have from around season 5 where she expresses a similar sentiments that she loves tom and b'elanna but she doesnt think the writers give their actual characters consideration and writes plots that dont work for them and
however like they really SHOULD have had that conversation in a MUCH. earlier episode, realistically it should have occured in season 5 in the latter half of the season. theres no reason at all it should have taken til early season seven.
a lot of the odds in their relationship come from this frustrating lack of communication (which id argue wasnt really present in their early writing but i digress) and the talk in the flier serves to finally address this.
b'elanna has an inability to actually express emotional wants and needs (which we see come up again in lineage for a truly excellent follow up) and tom whilst he does care doesnt really notice... well much of anything
but ultimately its also that part where she tells neelix that if she told tom she was upset he WOULD drop the race and spend time with her instead but she just doesnt want to is kind of indicitative of where theyre at characterwise and relationshipwise
and like i'm glad they finally have tom and b'elanna talk about their relationship, and i do also really appreciate the insight into b'elannas psyche we get and them addressing her inability to actually voice her emotions or address any of her concerns
(though i will say this i do see a lot of people exaggerate how bad it acctually is) (id also argue its not neccessarily unique to just him) but drive itself isnt my favourite episode, though i dont dislike it either, i have a major soft spot for tom and b'elanna so im endeared to it flaws and all.
tbh id argue its from post drive in s7 that theres a noticeable difference in toms writing. like he i think he pretty quickly gets a lot more consistent and emotionally mature. but god yeah through seasons 5/6 especially he does get some pretty inconsistent character writing

A young Lura on her War College cadet days, maybe captain of the Bat'leth team?
