The same thing literally just happened to me earlier this month, and it was odd getting back into looking at options. If its any help this person has a very extensive blog, ranking of tablets, and recommendations! It was a lifesaver for me so I'd figure I'd share it!

it feels like overtime, if a messaging platform grows big enough, it either dies off or is forced to grow and make profit (or becomes more subject to laws of specific countries and / or credit cards)

this is why I think its important for communities to have a website to fall back on, so change isn't as difficult and doesn't need to be centered on a singular messaging platform
