It didn't make it into today's press release but congrats to @crkn-rcdr.bsky.social for getting CFI funding for Open Science Infrastructure for Canad(ian)a: Digital Collections of the Future. Big step towards an exciting future for the Canadiana platform.

The Categorical Collapse of AI – What Libraries Are For

We have differentiated vocabulary for literacy: reading critically, reading for pleasure, reading for research. We don't have that yet for AI. That absence isn't neutral: laurenpressley.com/library/2026...

CBC is coming about 5 days late to this party (Acadie Nouvelle published the minister's 2-page list of ideas last Thursday).

What everyone seems to be missing about these ideas though is that almost none of them save money in the short-term and therefore won't accomplish the minister's objective.

The cash value of MUN going from 7 VPs to 3 VPs plus 3 Assoc VPs (or whatever they are calling them), is probably $400K, +/- $100K.

MUN's structural deficit is $20M.

The move is a reasonable response to public concern about admin. It does not significantly address the uni's financial challenge.

not surprised i guess. so much spent on Signal Hill to just sell is a shame, as is Harlow and the library space there (assuming that was still there). likely none of it used as well as it could have been.
