Aging drives a program of DNA methylation decay in plant organs Plants display a wide range of life spans and aging rates. Although dynamic changes to DNA methylation are a hallmark of aging in mammals, it is unclear whether similar molecular signatures reflect ra...

Out in @science.org this week: A decline in epigenetic silencing of TEs in older plant organs but not in the shoot meristem. TCX5 and TCX6 help regulate DNA methylation in this context.

Cool! Another example of dissociation between FN and EFN!

That is awesome! I imagine the floral nectary is still lost in this species right?

A new species of functionally dioecious bush tomato from the “Solanum dioicum + S. echinatum group” of Solanum subgenus Leptostemonum is described. Solanum nectarifolium Martine & Brennan, sp. nov...

Out today! Our newly-described bush tomato #Solanum nectarifolium appears to be the first species in the genus with extrafloral nectaries that are visible to the naked eye. And ants seem to love 'em.

At the end of 2024 I did a chronological round up of all the #plantscience in @science.org that year.
So how did 2025 pan out? This year, I’m grouping papers thematically instead of chronologically so read on to find out what exciting plant science came out over the last 12 months. (1/22)

Congrats @jeffgroh.bsky.social et al. Some avocado trees open female-phase flowers in the morning & then male in afternoon. Others show complementary pattern (m->f), to synchronize pollination of two types. Jeff show this to be a >45Mya polymorphism at a transcription factor across 100s of species.

Self-organization of vascular strands drives their patterning in the Arabidopsis shoot apex In plants, the development of the shoot vascular system is closely coordinated with lateral organ formation at the shoot apical meristem. Despite exte…

Ground breaking works from Agata Burian’s lab showing beautiful self organizing patterns of internal vasculature strands ahead of epidermal auxin maxima! Most importantly, the new opening strands form convergent angles that close to those observed in Fibonacci, Lucas, and Bijugated spiral patterns.
