The government froze local housing allowance, which effectively meant a real-terms cut to housing benefit. This is what it means for renters

A copy of the book 'Never Split The Difference - negotiating as if your life depended on it' by Chris Voss, with Tahl Raz.

Book 20 of 2026.

A hostage negotiator's take on negotiation. Pitched as a business book, but the context is quite different - there's no splitting the difference in a hostage negotiation - you either get them out or you don't. A few useful tips for life, and some interesting stories. 3⭐

Really weird day for weather in Yorkshire - sun, heavy hail, rain. But dried up enough for a lovely evening in the lanes.

BBC immigration investigation comes across as a v unusally editorialised + framed piece of reporting on the BBC 10 o'clock news for many years.

Poor to choose an election period, when immigraion salience has biggest contrast between voters of different parties in Wales, Scotland + England.

I don't think so. East India as close as you can get - but would love someone to tell me I'm wrong :)

It's odd - I often stay in Newham when I'm in London for work. If I'm at Olympic Park I can cycle in/out of central London on a TFL bike. If I'm at Excel I think nearest docking station is East India. Seems particularly odd nothing at city hall - and such good lanes now it'd be a breeze :)

The lanes are great. It really needs a closer Santander cycle station - bizarre there's not one at City Hall at least.

Terrifyingly plausible. Perhaps a few more elections like Hungary's will make it less so...?

The Tyne and Wear Metro also has a station called 'University' which serves one of the two Sunderland Uni campuses. I do wonder how many people arriving in Newcastle for the first time head there expecting to find Newcastle or Northumbria Uni.

Book 18 of 2026.

Disturbing but darkly (laugh out loud) funny. And really sensory - colours, smells, textures. Real what have I just read? stuff.

A copy of 'From Germany to Germany: Diary 1990' by Günter Grass stands on a table.

Book 17 of 2026.

German reunification diarised. Grass is frustrating - arrogant and naive in equal measure. A reminder that not everyone was optimistic in the early 1990s as we might think 30 years on.

What I read in March.

Nice mix of fiction and non-fiction. All decent, but would particularly recommend Abundance and the Plokhy book on wartime Chernobyl.
