RIP Sam Kieth, dead at 63
Loved the cartoon series of this, it deals with depression far more seriously than one might expect (and is a fun ride.)
This is devastating. Sam Kieth is an artist whose work made such an impression, for many of my generation the first exposure to art that seemed weird and fucked-up and also way better than everybody else. The Maxx letter pages are also filled with adolescent SA survivors saying the comic helps
rest in peace sam kieth
you were one of the coolest comic artists I have ever seen
I adored that like five year stretch at DC when he did a bunch of Batman minis and graphic novels. His version of the character was wholly his own.
PANEL 1: NARRATOR: "Cultivating the measured NPR cadence and placid deference to the military that characterizes the ideal neoliberal subject, Clark Kent returns to the editorial meeting..." A group of DAILY PLANET reporters are in a meeting, Clark Kent is responding to a question from his boss. CLARK: "Well, chief, the bombing campaign--" PANEL 2: Clark is talking and the other reporters and co-workers look unhappy. CLARK: "Obviously war in the region is not-ah-"ideal," but regime change could ultimately provide socioeconomic benefits that far outweigh the regrettable civilian casualties..." CLARK (thinking): "As Superman, last son of Krypton, these words of course sicken me; however, it's Clark Kent's job to manufacture consent!" PANEL 3: (inset in a larger panel) One reporter is whispering to another. REPORTER: "Kent is such an off-putting sociopath" REPORTER 2: "I hope he kills himself". An arrow points to this inset panel that reads "Thanks to super-hearing" from Clark's ear. Clark is smiling and thinking to himself. CLARK (thinking): "Looks like my secret identity as Clark Kent is safe...FOR NOW!"

"People doing weird stuff is how you get good stuff. You just have to accept a lot of bad stuff that gets produced on the way."
The trailer accidentally played twice in a row before a movie I saw last year. First time: Scattered chuckles. Second time: Dead silence.
rolling out the red carpet for an airport novelist who deigns to write a 15 page comic every five years
Inadvertently(?) the meanest/funniest post about his death
getting mad at a comic because I can easily carry it around and actually see the art!!!!!
it's not dissimilar. i think someone definitely noticed the green on black looking cool.
People think toku is about special effects but what really defines the genre is the presence of a quarry
CONVERSATION IS A PRELUDE TO FAILURE
Couldn't get it out of my head so I made it happen
love love love Amancio's art at the tail end of the series here. the page where superman and brainiac are throwing fists and half of it's just action lines is so cool. i wish he'd popped in now and then to do more comics instead of sticking to animation.

Justified pals:
Unless you're a big Leonard buff, you might not know that there was a made-for-Showtime movie in the mid-90s whose climax is the opening of the show. Raylan is played by James LeGross, who plays Wade Messer in Justified. The movie, Pronto, is based on the novel of the same name.
