Touche, I really wouldn't follow the English council scene close enough. This debate just popped up on my TL and I thought Id share my 2 cents.

Im Irish, it doesn't affect me either way. I personally find the idea of any coporate entity charging people to keep their homes lit and warm despicable, particularly using natural occuring resources to do it.

500 solar panels also take up land that can't be used afterwards. The Greens plan to support retrofitting here would save land and put money back in people's pocket through excess energy these panels generate in the summer.

I am aware its not replacing gov spending, but they will charge for the energy. That is household income not being spent in other parts of the economy. IGP will say you recoup that money in taxes, but it's naive to believe any for profit corporate entity is paying its fair share in taxes.

Its almost like they make money by shilling for big tech.

Helicopters aren't a public utility though. Anyone on this grid would be paying money out of the UK economy into the pocket of a foreign investor, just to save the government a few quid on the setup.

Maybe its capitalism being so hostile to people living in general that is making everyone fatalistic.

They still can afford housing, a green transition etc, they choose not to. Progressives should see the methods we need to take going forward. Polite protest will be ignored.

I sympathise with those people. Its a good win against the Christian/authoritarian, but alot of people who suffered under Orban are unlikely to be much better off under Maygar. I'm open to being surprised.

I think if being correct is holding a group of principled people in an inherently evil country more accountable than a political party who failed at their job, I'm cool with being wrong.

It's also weird to care about the cost of life for these countries with Trump in power, but defend the Democrats who've upheld economic sanctions on Iran that hurt normal Iranians more than the regime or who strangle developing countries with debt in US dollars.

In terms of death in Africa or the war in Iran, I accept that wouldn't have happened under Harris, but I don't blame voters for that because there is still Democrats in the Senate and Congress. They've done nothing while Trump has usurped US democracy.

You keep shifting the goalposts, I've not changed my stance that public opinion doesn't negate the atrocities that came before and that a lot of people (be it a few thousands or a few millions) have consistently campaigned about it. It only mattered to the Democratic establishment after 2024.

Democrat voters sympathies started shifting in favour of Palestine in 2022 according to that article. It was at 49% in 2023

Had the Democrats won the elections in 2024 then those 22,000 Arab-American voters in Michigan or the progressive vote wouldn't have mattered. The violence would of continued as it has done under previous Democratic regimes.

The current genocide is unprecedented in its scale, but Israeli violence against Palestinians is not special. The violence has always been wrong and lots of people have always cared about it. The Democratic Party did not care about this until it clearly cost them the 2024 election.

Palestinians have been murdered by Israel for decades, with US backing. Its only now that principled Arab-Americans in places like Michigan lost the establishment an election have we seen signs that the tide might turn. I think their scrafice should be respected rather than belittled
