Honestly, that's exactly how I read what the police chief said -we won't ask your immigration status, so don't tell us. If we don't know, we can't report you to ICE. It's stupid in that it shouldn't be necessary, but I do think he's trying to tell his community how to call for help w/o risking ICE.
It sounds like the police chief is trying to tell community members just not to tell the cops their immigration status, and it won't come up. Sad that it needs to be said, and worse that a child is dead, but I hope I'm reading the chief's tone correctly that he doesn't want this shit either.
