Amid a war on public knowledge, libraries are pushing outward, enlarging the commons through new configurations of civic and creative life.

In her latest — and, yes, 34th! — article for Places, @shannonmattern.bsky.social writes about building the infrastructure we need to keep ourselves free.

I took this picture in #Kachchh, #Gujarat in 2008, just when the wind turbines started dotting the landscape, some of them overlooking this pond from which women were collecting #water. Couldn't think of a better image than this to begin my talk with today.

I think MDPI and Frontiers are a variation of the Elsevier and Springer model on cocaine, catering to the overproduction addiction.

Fake papers are contaminating the world’s scientific literature, fueling a corrupt industry and slowing legitimate lifesaving medical research ‘Paper mills’ are contaminating the world’s scholarly output with fake papers that hinder research. Lifesaving biomedical fields are especially hard hit.

The commodification of scientific publishing has led to an overproduction with 6 million papers being published each year. It has also enabled the publishing of fake "peer reviewed" papers through paper mills. The publish or perish model has to go!

The Netherlands has long passed over the threshold of normalisation, the questions are how far it will go or will there be real pushback.

Burning the Breadbasket China’s retreat from U.S. soy is feeding the push for more biofuels

The tail wags the dog in energy. Biofuels are not currently a solution demanded by the climate community; they are solution to a crisis of overproduction. open.substack.com/pub/thebreak...

How are traditional #water harvesting systems in #India entangled with questions of postcolonial modernity & social injustice? I address this in my keynote at the International Congress on #Science, #Technology and #Development at the University of Taubate, 24th October.

I attended my first @SammyObeid live stand up show this evening at #Amsterdam. I wanted his signature and I had only one thing in my bag that could be used for signing. A copy of David Graeber's Pirate Enlightenment. In many ways an ideal tribute to Graeber.

in 2011, the president of antifa hired me to give fashion consultancy to the organization. i recommended everyone wear navy suits with tan shoes, dress sneakers, and golf polos with slim chinos. if you arrested everyone today wearing these things, you'd destroy antifa

Francesca Albanese and Great Thunberg are remarkable allies, and incredibly courageous, but no one has endured what Palestinian people have had and will continue to go through. They need to be acknowledged as a collective. This is the least that the world can do.

Only the Palestinian people deserve the #NobelPeacePrize. Enduring decades of brutal occupation, massacres & now a live streamed genocide, and yet holding on to their fortitude & kindness, they are the lodestar for humanity. No one deserves it more this year.

Memory Maps of Homs, Syria A mapping workshop with refugees from Homs, Syria, illuminates the complexity of rebuilding after war.

"Under the Assad regime ... we lived together [in Homs] but did not see the city through one another’s eyes. Even planners don't recognize fractures in the pluralist city.

A just and inclusive reconstruction must confront the sectarian and class-based ruptures that old urban forms helped conceal."

I had a moving, heartbreaking, powerful discussion with 2 Israelis who lost family members to Hamas on Oct. 7th, 2 years ago today, on the power of 'radical forgiveness' & on standing up to the Israeli government that abandoned their family members.

This extremely alarming assertion needs verification.

Jamal Khashoggi, the Washington Post, and the Cost of Speaking Out As Saudi Arabia hosts comedians and courts gamers, the silenced voice of Jamal Khashoggi still echoes.

Washington Post dismantled the platform Jamal wrote on. Discarded the fellowship they created in his memory.

They fired me unjustly for speaking the truth.

But I’ll never stop talking about my friend, writer, and amazing human, Jamal Khashoggi.

RIP, Jamal.
