This is a perfect example of how conflict isn’t just meant to be two people yelling in disagreement. They are in conflict with HAL. That’s an obstacle they must overcome. Without that it’s just two guys talking.

I’ll throw my hat in the ring for every scene, without exception, needing conflict.

It’s just that conflict comes in many shapes and sizes and can sometimes be quite small.

Small is fine. Non, less so.

If everything in life came easy, you’d be unsatisfied.

Granted, we all could use a break to get ahead, but if you never had to earn your advancements, they’d end up feeling hollow.

Advancements in the plot are no different. They must challenge the protagonist or your reader won’t care.

When I see a character state with perfect clarity my exact thinking on anything, my eyes glaze.

It’s like the screenwriter wrote down their intentions, then just shoved it into dialogue rather than building a story from it.

Ok so I actually have a scrap of a note somewhere for a comedy about a couple having to confront the shocking truth that their baby is, in fact, ugly. It’s called ugly baby. This might just be the sign I needed to finally get to work on it. I’ll be sure to thank you in the credits!

Absolutely. It’s scary at first, being confronted with the reality that your masterpiece is more so a bunch of broken pieces, most of which went missing. But it’s eye opening and necessary and your writing gets so much better from there… eventually 😅

Classic new screenwriter move:

Everything is a secret.

Everyone is more than meets the eye, cards close to their chest, playing a dangerous game only they know they’re playing.

Sounds pretty cool until you realize the reader isn’t in on any of it.

Secrets are cool. Clarity is cooler.

It’s a tough sell as a lot of aspiring screenwriters can say roughly the same.

Agents, managers, producers etc are drowning in give-me-a-shots. What stands out is cold hard cred.

High scores on the blacklist. Top ranking in major competitions. Stuff like that.

Curated as in protective of their image. Which means don’t rustle any feathers by being honest about your peers. If doing so is considered biting the hand then hopefully you get where I’m coming from. It probably is career suicide for a lot of people. That doesn’t make it right.
