If it truly took me time or effort, I would charge — or send them to a good expert who does planning professionally. But never once has a friend had something truly complicated.

Then again, my friends aren’t that rich (or have that many kids) to have complicated stuff.

I love helping friends with tax questions. They offer to pay. But then their question isn’t complicated; people are taught to fear taxes and think any change is a complicated thing, and it’s not. They are always surprised, and end up learning about our tax system by the example of their own taxes.
