[screen goes black, the theatre is silent]

Voice: “is that…”

[music, drenched in reverb: “dooby dooby doot doot doot”]

[fade in on some ridiculously famous person removing a mask]

rfp: “I’m here to destroy… everything”

[music, drenched in reverb: “aaaa”, huge 808 kick pitch bending down]

this idea came to me in a dream: movie trailer with one of those dramatic cinematic remixes of songs but it was Annie Lennox’s “No More ‘I Love You’s”

To this day I don't think there's a better way to learn the fundamentals

Imagine my surprise! It hadn't even been marked as signed in the store.

I don't know that this story has a conclusion, or a message. I just felt like documenting a cycle in the universe. It rhymes, y'know? A perfect little coincidence for a dark, blustery afternoon in spring.

though not my book buying habit, much to my budget's chagrin. I've been on a kick lately and finally got around to picking up Thunder City from my large Stack Of Books To Read. I opened it up, and...

This memory has always stuck with me. (The books too! They're hidden away somewhere in this apartment.) The reason I'm thinking about it now is that I picked up a copy of Thunder City, which is a new(ish) Mortal Engines book! As I've grown older I've waxed and waned with my reading habit,

I don't know exactly what went through his mind when I strode up to the table, dozen books in hand. He signed every last one of them, eventually getting bored of just signatures and drawing characters from the Murderous Maths illustrations. He was exceptionally kind to a very enthusiastic kid.

(Ottakar's was named after a Tintin book, and it was a replica of the rocket Tintin & co. went to the moon in during the events of Destination: Moon and Explorers On The Moon)

The bookstore staff checked in with me after maybe half an hour had passed and once they had affirmed that yes, I was here with purpose, they let me pootle about the store as I waited.

Eventually Philip Reeve arrived. He set up a little signing table beneath the giant rocket in the kids' section.

...but I somehow convinced them to let me take the bus twenty minutes into town and go to the signing by myself. I was probably 12. I do not know how I pulled this off, but I did. Off I went on the 365 bus carrying a straining plastic bag with probably a dozen books in it.

I arrived hours early.

Mortal Engines quickly became one of my favourite books; then there was a sequel!

One day I learned that Philip Reeve was doing a signing at my local bookstore (Ottakar's in The Glades in Bromley where I grew up) and I simply, simply *had* to be there. My parents were busy that day...

These books were (mostly) illustrated by one Philip Reeve @philipreeve.bsky.social. Characterful cartoons and diagrams, they were just as key to the appeal of the books as any of the maths was to my nerdy little mind.

When I learned that Philip Reeve was writing a novel??? tremendous excitement

When I was a kid I was a voracious reader of books. Fiction, non-fiction, anything they'd let me get my grubby little mitts on: I'd be reading it.

One of my favourite series was called Murderous Maths. Like Horrible Histories but for maths. As dorky as it sounds, and a lovely series.

I’ve recently started sending letters back and forth with a friend and it has been very fun! I don’t follow people on this platform *but* if you’d consider me an acquaintances or friend and would be down to receive a physical letter occasionally do reach out

Boys Go To Jupiter back *shockingly* quick with their sophomore effort. They’ve got big band arrangements! They’ve got narrative songs with third act twists! They’ve got Lynne-ian backing vocals! What’s not to love.

I’ll have to double check with her! I do remember that as well 😅 if there’d be a way to get that artwork printed out legibly I’d love to add it to the gallery :)

A photo of two piano keyboards on a stand. Above them, mounted on the wall, are five framed copies of square artwork I’ve used as album art in the past. They are organised in a three by two grid in chronological order, with a gap in the bottom right corner.

Erik Hall’s trilogy of modern interpretations of Minimalist classics has been a real delight of the 2020s for me. This final instalment is shorter but no less sweet than the first two and successfully balances reaching broadly through the genre and sounding coherent throughout.
