Welcome to Bitumount!
Bitumount is an abandoned plant north of Fort McKay, a "historic resource" built in 1925 and known as the place where oil was first separated from the sand. It's also terrifying and frequented by bears.
Red Carpet to Ruin
I appealed up the chain of command, taking it as far as the Minister's office. At one point a Manager for the Department of Historical Designations told me that it's off limits for safety reasons given that the site is dangerous and "frequented by bears." Hence the commemorative t-shirt.
I asked the Alberta Government for permission to access Bitumount (for an art project). At first my inquiry was received in a positive light but then the communication stopped. After waiting a couple of weeks and following up there was an about face, I was summarily denied.
The grizzlies do seem to be a bit much, but this is what I’ve been told by the Alberta government- “frequented by bears” was the exact phrase, to be fair. That’s great that you’ve actually been there! Thanks for the comment Beth!
Happy to announce the availability of our new commemorative t-shirt for Alberta's most beloved/terrifying historical site and danger zone... Bitumount!
