J’imagine oui, mais j’ai tellement de mal avec QGIS, la dernière fois que je m’en suis servie mon fond de carte était distordu et aucun moyen de régler ça 😭Faudrait que je fasse avec qqun en direct qui a l’habitude de QGIS

Apparently it also accepts ISO 3166 codes for country names so it’s relatively easy to replace, however each species is usually found in multiple countries so I’ll have to create a csv with each line being an "observation" of X species in Y country

I only have the country names, it’s from a big old review paper that I digitized in the form of that Excel so it wasn’t precise, but thank you anyway it looks a lot like what I’m searching for!!

Very quick:
I have an Excel with species and the countries they are found in.
Is there a way to generate a distribution map very quickly for each species? Something visual? Or click on a country and have the list of all species I put there? Have something interactive?
Thank you in advance

And one last buggo before bed. Green June beetle grubs will use their little rolls of backfat to scoot around because their teeny legs are kind of worthless.

The only problem with home servers is how addictive it becomes at some point :’) I wonder what kind of neurological pathway in the human brain is being hacked when we get into coding and infrastructure, I was built to get addicted to sugar not the command line! XD

Anyway, build a home server.
Best decision in my life.
Now back to writing 👋

It’s funny how me deciding 6 months ago that I wanted to build a home server to store my photos, spending 2 weeks frantically learning about docker containers, network, virtualisation, would give me the skills to create an instance for a TaxonWorks database, but here we are.

3. I have progressed enough on this side-project to be able to talk about it: I am building a Scarab Species File 🪲
Based on the TaxonWorks framework, like the Orthoptera Species File, this website aims to provide a collaborative space for an updated database for Scarabaeoidea species.

2. Eizo is now officially a viral lizard! With 1M views on Instagram and 1800~ followers, we are considering creating a dedicated account for him here on BlueSky as well. Many comments point out his size and the tameness of his babies, so we’re delighted to see our efforts in husbandry recognized :)

1. I am writing my PhD manuscript. It’s terrible, but it’s getting better. I love/hate the process, hate the lack of time to properly finish analyses, love the much-needed contextualisation of everything I’ve done yet and the feeling that all pieces of the puzzle are clicking together.

Branch near the dik-diks occupied by an enormous cerambycid beetle, the clearly visible pin hole in its back definitely not detracting from its lifelike appearance

Important to note that the dik-diks are overseen by a cerambycid of roughly equivalent size

2. Food as a means to lower aggressiveness. I forgot the exact term, but a consequence of this food motivation is that they may display aggressiveness when not fed, and this can be dangerous with bigger species, such as Komodo dragons. Out of convenience and for employee security, zoos may overfeed.

a brown and white cat is laying on a green blanket . ALT: a brown and white cat is laying on a green blanket .

This demanding behavior makes us believe that they are constantly hungry, just like a cat gets fat because we are unable to resist feeding it when it is asking for food.

Monitor lizards in captivity (smaller and larger species of Varanus genus equally) tend to be obese for two reasons.
1. They are extremely food motivated. Even in nature, they will accumulate fat in case of food shortage, and you can find many fat monitor lizards in the wild, tho it’s transitory.

The video is doing well on Instagram (30k views vs the usual 800), and I’m getting comments from exotic vets and lizard owners praising the exercise and enrichment here.
I’m happy it’s recognized! Too many monitor lizards end up with metabolic diseases because of overfeeding and lack of exercise 🦎

Medical doctors have no particular expertise on spider bites, and absent the patient bringing in the spider in a jar, and/or a venom test, 99% of "spider bites" are something else.

Medical doctors, in the absense of knowledge, will pass along folklore just to avoid admitting they don't know.

We believe that inciting our lizards to use their muscles is important to ensure they don't become obese and get the amount of stimulation they would normally get when hunting in the wild. This is what we can do as enrichment along all the other activities we have for them 👌

Pas vraiment encore, le challenge c'est de lui préparer une piste où on sera sûr qu'il ne peut pas se blesser en retombant ! Après, avec ses petites pattes toutes courtes, il n'est pas sûr qu'il soit en lice pour battre des records...

Two crows march through a snowy field. They see a pile of snow on top of a fence post. "Heh, that lump of snow looks like..." starts one... Close up of the lump of snow that is revealed to be a living snowy owl. "Gasp" exhales one crow. "...a spirit!" exclaims the second.
