Overall the results of this paper highlight that declining labor market prospects strongly contribute to political polarization. Weakening the blow of economic shocks and structural change on those workers most affected is thus likely to contribute to more stability in the political sphere.

Comparing these effects with existing results from the literature on the electoral effects of immigration suggests that the contribution of the manufacturing decline is only slightly smaller than the contribution of immigration.

Examining the separate effects of rising trade exposure and automation technologies suggests that those two forces, which are strongly connected to the manufacturing decline, have both contributed to the increasing effect on far-right vote-shares in roughly equal parts.

These vote gains of the far-right primarily come at the expense of the Social Democratic party, but also (to a lesser extent) of the Conservative party. Overall, the manufacturing decline has contributed to a pronounced rightward shift in the Austrian parliament.

In this paper, I show that these two trends are connected. Applying an instrumental variable strategy shows that declines in manufacturing employment directly led to increases in far-right voting.

The success of the far-right is strongly built on support of the working class, as far-right voters are more reliant on employment in the manufacturing sector, more often work in blue collar occupations, are more likely to be unemployed, are less skilled and are more likely to be male.

The manufacturing decline coincides with the rise of far-right populist parties, not only in Austria, but in most Western democracies. Consequently, the far-right experiences particularly strong support from workers negatively affected by structural change.

Pretty much exactly 80 years after the liberation of Auschwitz, the richest man in the world uses the Nazi salute at the inauguration of his close ally as US president. What should rationally not be surprising is still so deeply shocking and simply difficult to comprehend.
