Our partners at NAACP LDF filed suit in Alameda County on behalf of a Dearing descendant. In 1924, Sidney & Iréne Dearing, the first Black homeowners in Piedmont, were forced out through fraud and racial terror.

This team played a crucial role in the historic journey, starting with Governor Gavin Newsom signing AB 3121 into law on Sept. 30, 2020, creating the first-in-the-nation reparations task force, which included EJS President Lisa Holder and EJS Board Member Donald K. Tamaki.
The attorneys and staff of the Civil Rights Enforcement Section of the Calif DOJ spent two years researching and compiling materials for the historic California Reparations Task Force Report released in 2023.
