It’s interesting one of the architects of the modern system is now bemoaning it and it doesn’t seem he has learnt his lesson. Schools should be about developing a human, not a worker bee for whichever an ill-sighted Nostradamus deems will be the next big industry. They’ve stripped schools of funds.

Exactly. It’s a problem in plain sight which doesn’t or hasn’t affected MPs. Private schools and grammar schools have very good and well funded libraries. It’s the schools who need them the most which have them the least.

Honestly wish publishers understood kids love more complex non fiction. Freakanomics was a huge hit with the kids and I had to butcher some books as a librarian to offer kids the books they would love to read.

The current government's pledge to put a library in every primary school by 2029 is commendable, but we need libraries in every secondary school too.

If not, we risk many children, particularly those from low income families, having their reading habits broken at a critical age.
