It’s been a long while since I’ve posted on here. Been working on a lot, some of it’s finally bearing fruit!
Excited for my latest review!

The 30th Annual Meeting of the Society for Behavioral Neuroendocrinology is being held at one of the most iconic destinations in the world - Niagara Falls, New York!
Details on registration, programming, and hotel booking will be coming your way shortly. Mark your calendar for July 8 – 11, 2026!
Wut?!
First whole-brain recording of social sound processing in a vertebrate. Surprises start in the hindbrain; thalamus gates conspecific calls; male and female brains diverge downstream. Work by @joerghenninger.bsky.social, @mh123.bsky.social sky.social and team. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
I used Claude Opus 4.5/4.6 (and a bit of Codex GPT-5.3) to port edgeR to Python. See edgePython github.com/pachterlab/e...
This allowed me to develop a single-cell DE method that extends NEBULA with edgeR Empirical Bayes. All in one week. Details in doi.org/10.64898/202...
This thread shows a deliberate defunding of U.S. science, engineering, social science, innovation, and education excellence. It’s a U.S. national security, competitiveness, and economic disaster.
Why are some males caring toward infants while others are neglectful or abusive? I'm so pleased to share work that my colleagues and I @princeton.edu have just published @nature.com (an explanatory thread to follow!) (1/8)
My department at CSU Northridge is hiring a vertebrate functional morphologist! We've got a great EEB group, and we're looking for someone to carry forward a tradition of enriching organismal courses and community-engaged research. App review starts March 15

Congratulations to Nicholas Antonson @nickantonson.bsky.social, winner of the 2025 JEB Outstanding Paper Prize, for his research into the neuromuscular coordination of movement and breathing in woodpecker drilling

Why do mated songbirds sing beautifully coordinated duets? My Ph.D. work showed that duets are cooperative signals that pairs use to defend their shared territory. This visual summary is based on Logue & Gammon 2004 Animal Behaviour 68: 521-531 and Logue 2005 Cognition, Brain, Behavior 9:497-510.
Congrats!
A must-read review. It argues that brain areas are only one of several organizing principles and are not especially central, given their weak correspondence to function. Cytoarchitecture and connectivity are a starting point, not the endpoint.

As a longtime fan of cool papers in @currentbiology.bsky.social, I am really thrilled to see this out!
This study sets the stage for understanding the origins of novel (vocal) behaviors.
Big shout out to the main architects of this work @xmikezheng20.bsky.social and @cliffscience.bsky.social
If you're an undergrad looking for a great biodiversity/conservation field course, please check this out. Run by my buddy Jordan Karubian through Tulane U.
Huge congrats!!
Folks have been super kind regarding this manuscript
It is such a contentious topic that I wondered if letting this project go beyond the four walls of the lab was a personal/emotional mistake
But no - it wasn't
People are chill. People are nice. This community rules 🤘

ABS Student Research and Developing Nations Grants! ABS offers the following grants to support graduate student research: Student Research Grants, ABS Conservation Award and Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Awards. The ABS also offers an Early Career Grant in Conservation Behavior and Developing Nations Grant to support students and other researchers from developing nations. Applicants for student grants must be enrolled in a graduate program and must be active members of ABS (student membership fees cost $17-$34). Research grants range from $500-$2,000 USD, depending on the category of the grant and evaluations. Individuals may receive only one ABS research grant during their lifetime. More details on how the grants and how to apply in the link in the post.
Hey grad students studying animal behavior! Need a little extra research $$? (Don't we all?)
Apply for an ABS Student Research Grant! We award grants up to $2,000 to grad students & give feedback on the proposals. Deadline Dec 15.

I do want to take a minute to share the backstory of our paper on the total solar eclipse that triggered dawn behavior in birds.
