#HeritageTressures This spike came from the Burma-Thai Railway, built by Far East Prisoners of War in WWII. LSTM later became a centre for FEPOW tropical disease research, treating the long-term physical and psychological health issue which arose from their experiences during captivity.

#HeritageTressures Pen and ink drawing of anopheles mosquito by Alwen Myfanwy Evans. Alwen was LSTM’s first female lecturer in Entomology. She began her work at LSTM in 1918 with the study of tsetse flies but went on to specialise in tropical insects, in particular mosquitos.

#HeritageTressures In the earlier years of LSTM’s history portable microscopes played a vital role in researching tropical diseases, special wooden carrycases were designed to keep the instruments safe during transport on research expeditions in West Africa and South America.

Copy of the Nobel Medal Awarded to Dr Ronald Ross, he is widely known as the first British Nobel laureate. He received the Nobel Prize in 1902 for his work on malaria. Ross became LSTM’s first lecturer in 1899 and went on to hold various senior positions with LSTM #HeritageTressures
