My walks are shaping how I think about scale and momentum.
The piano is doing the opposite. It demands precision—staying with a single sentence until it says exactly what I need it to.
I’m discovering an unexpected place of balance 🤓

Field notes:
Training for a high-altitude hike, so I’ve been walking long distances in some ridiculous heat (timing is everything 😅)
And then, coming home and building the piano repertoire, adding new pieces a few bars at a time.
Both practices flow into the writing.
Among the worst applications of AI yet in a sea of garbage that’s competing to downgrade everyday life:
AI customer support
If your goal is to make customers feel trapped, unheard, and quietly furious in a maze of non-answers… congratulations, it’s working.

I’ve left out the golden-age canon deliberately. There’s been a ton of brilliant work since, and that’s what I wanted to highlight.
All to say: When we dream about the stars, we don’t dream the same way.
We arrive with different pasts. We imagine different futures.
And space in all its vastness is filled with our hopes and echoes. It mirrors us as we attempt to reconcile with the unknown, in our quest to find meaning.
The universe also holds infinite strangeness. To feel lost in the great void:
— Adrian Tchaikovsky for alternative intelligences that question the idea of being human
— Alastair Reynolds for deep time and cosmic indifference
— Liu Cixin for unsettling civilizational-scale vastness
Along similar lines:
— Ursula K. Le Guin for the price of power and the meaning of belonging
— Kameron Hurley for the cost of what we might need to do to survive
— Martha Wells for corporations, ways of resistance and autonomy
— Edward Ashton for what makes a person a *person*
Space with tough questions about who gets to belong + the systems we carry with us:
— S.B. Divya for engineered bodies and who gets to want more
— Yoon Ha Lee for systems that control reality and the cost of dissent
— Nnedi Okorafor for identity that doesn’t dissolve in the face of assimilation
Here’s more space as a reflection of human identity:
— Arkady Martine for memory and the weight of culture
— Ann Leckie for identity, consciousness, and the shape of self
— Becky Chambers for connection, and a sense of home in the vast unknown
Some of us don’t see space as escape. It’s continuum.
We take everything with us—power, culture, inequality, even taste.
Its infinite possibility reveals who we are.
