its linear, and the only mechanic is walking/interaction, so the focus is squarely on environments, characters, music, writing etc. it will have a lot of powerful moments.
i think people who liked me for SCS will be on board with this one; it also focuses on dreams but in a very different way

looking back, i think its the tightest and most arcadey game i did even tho epoch has the permadeath

yea its probably one of the most scalable games ever made
this is interesting to me because the avenue i explore in attempts to iterate on it are implementing shmup design, which is interesting in its own right, but thats technically a side path on the upgrade tree.
i say all this cos i have an fps pet project rn. it will be secret until it ever drops.
it has similar sort of body-blocking dynamics, and with a lot of enemies the kind of pre-emptive shooting to snuff attacks, with that feeling of having to watch startups to prioritise who to shoot.
its that sorta gameplay just faster and bigger. even with mouselook thats still the underlying dynamic

tank controls, movement is awkward making it hard to avoid damage, so resources are important, backtracking forces u to engage multiple times.
i think if a dev wants to iterate on doom they may need to think survival horror instead of fps or twinstick
in general im just doing stuff when i feel like now, instead of sweating full time on a single project.
idk when or if this game will be completed
im p much done with vidya now, moved onto writing and started this year which is going well.
but apparently cant keep away from a little devving, made this over the past 2 days

i was 2 months into a different project, then suddenly had one of those dreams where you're playing like the best game ever, the sort youd have as a kid
i thought about it and was very excited when i realised i was capable of approximating it.
so for my taste at least this is The game

concept for an unused book 2 boss, the only cut content i wish could have made it
'keef lawless' was a rockstar leader of the marauders, a whole plot-thread and duo of mad max levels that had to be cut for pacing.
only the first stage was made, and is 1-6 in the final game

theres also an element that timers are often counter-incentives mechanically, and from my experience players struggle with ambiguous gameplans. ive also had criticism of 'it doesnt let me play the way i want to', so i guess people can have false expectations of the 'mechanical window' so to speak

thinking of ways to translate the autoscroller snowballing dynamic of shmups into 3d action games.
epoch had enemies teleporting to chase but i feel like theres a more elegant solution.
its harder for actors to navigate 3d space so they tend to have more static and deterministic level design
