Something that really struck me about the arguments transphobes regularly make about trans women trying to "get access" to things is this bizarre and backwards idea that women are immensely privileged in modern day society in ways that men are not, and trans women are just men trying to cheat.

See, my mum would describe herself as a second-wave feminist, which is one of the demographics most susceptible to TERF rhetoric. But she saw through it: "I realized that nobody would willingly shoulder the immense difficulties of being a woman in our society unless they truly felt that way."

Mum didn't find my transition easy by any means, but she truly put in the work: she went to support groups (real ones, not the TERF horseshit), she read literature, she asked me to explain things as I see and feel them, and she asked other trans friends of mine for their perspective.

And she came to this conclusion through the lens of her own feminism: that even in modern society, where things are better for women, things still aren't GOOD for women, and it would take something quite extraordinary and genuine for someone born with male privilege to willingly give it up.

There's probably some Marxist point to be made there about defining identity through consumption or something.
