This is Achrioptera manga, a giant phasmid or stick insect native to Madagascar.
The specific epithet, "manga" means blue in Malagasy & it's not hard to see why. Only males are blue.
The tiny back wings ("alae") are an example of brachyptery: they're useless for flight, but have other functions.

Cherry blossom horseshoe crab 🌸
rhino beetles have strong armour, phasmids mimic sticks (mimicry almost didnt exist in the paleozoic), moths have a very short lifespan. very different vibes from a dragonfly or a titanopteran casually reaching 40 cm length . it is most definitely competition that played the most role imo.
i feel like its fairly obvious bc giant bugs exist now but they either mimic nature or live for a short while etc
well ive been into katydids since i was like 6 but somehow it doesn't offend me even tho im overall prone to gatekeeping
this guy was under every post about "green buge", writing "katydid" in caps, seems he couldn't take it anymore, this is probably how it feels when a hyper niche interests gains traction
i know
its not under my post

A character reference sheet. The drawing is done digitally. The reference sheet shows a brown stick grasshopper insect with six legs, two green eyes and two brown short antenna. He looks happy and is waving with one front arm. There are two other drawings near by showing other facial expressions he has.
This is Walter. He is an unspecified species of stick grasshopper, Proscopiidae.
I don't think I've ever shared him before here so here he is in all his glory.

A bright green katydid with wing buds. Her legs are spiny, has an ovipositor, and the pronotum is lined in white.
Front view of the katydid. It has a blocky, stout head.
Happy #invertefest! I was going to tell everyone how much I love this beautiful Pseudophyllus titan I got, unfortunately she refused to eat and passed away today 😞 that’s just how bug keeping goes, isn’t it?
