I know a really good way to kneecap Iran, and make their leverage over the Strait of Hormuz much less powerful.
Green energy.
If we don't need as much oil, then closing the strait has that much less effect.

it’s not that the broad center-left/democratic party is blameless or that the political right is never reacting to changes/provocations or the like, but that victory and defeat, success and failure are shaped by actors on both sides, as well as broad forces and the contingency of human events
Automatic blind trusts with no control for time of service needs to be the law.
(And those trusts run by hard left greenies bent on forcing the end of the fossil fuel companies would be 100% fine.)
This is huge.
Not so much because Aluminum is rare (it's not) but making it from scratch is energy intensive as all get out.
So this is a HUGE reduction in energy costs for structural aluminum, esp. for vehicles.

Sympathies. It's so hard.
The ‘repair’ lesson lands hard: maintenance is unglamorous, but without it institutions become stage sets. We keep rewarding the headline and then act surprised when the plumbing fails.
1. Amazon has built powerful pricing algorithms that have learned how to steer prices upward — not just on Amazon, but across the web. I have a new piece on how these algorithms work, and how they help sustain Amazon’s monopoly.
A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver is the book that started me on her.
HIRE KATHRYN. In an age of journalism in a death spiral, she's the real deal as investigative journalist, an excellent writer, a true thinker, and a real human being. She knows Christian nationalism as well as anyone.
This is why @naomikritzer.bsky.social's The Year Without Sunshine is one of my favorite disaster stories: www.uncannymagazine.com/article/the-...

Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage. A woman answers the door. We have come for the child, says the hooded figure So soon? she asks It is time, says the hooded figure. The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card! What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading! For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman, the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them. Do not cry mother. I am a writer now.

Do you ever think about how Georges Bataille and his French sociologist friends all got so obsessed with ritual human sacrifice that they formed a secret society to conduct one, but they couldn’t do it because nobody wanted to be the executioner and everyone wanted to be the victim?
Yeah, we got a flurry in western NY in late April of 1997, so I don't find it that weird.
I'm not joking when I say mRNA technology is more important than "AI" and it's a tragedy we're throwing billions into one while our government is aggressively defunding the other.
