The last section offers two ways to think about the contribution of IR and political science research in law of the sea: aiming for the 'horizons of feasibility' or the 'horizons of necessity.'
The chapter also lays out a research agenda for UNCLOS to fill these gaps, by drawing on diverse International Relations (IR) concepts, theories, and approaches.
I find that "(1) law-of-the-sea scholarship is dominated by lawyers, (2) UNCLOS scholarship is particularly weak in the United States, and (3) the use of IR theory to study the law of the sea occurs primarily in security studies." #Lawofthesea #BBNJ #UNCLOS
I've got a new chapter in A Research Agenda for Sustainable Ocean Governance, eds. Alger and Sumaila. It finally gave me the opportunity to collect some observations about contemporary #UNCLOS research.
ok but are we sure the whole “tariffs on an uninhabited island” thing isn’t a purposeful distraction? I think Trumpworld knows stuff like that triggers self-satisfied “look how dumb they are!” reactions.

wish I could cancel my Washington Post subscription a second time
It’s me, moonlighting on another podcast (podlighting?) talking about my favourite case: the Mauritius/UK dispute over the Chagos archipelago.
Decolonisation, the Cold War, US airbases - it’s got it all!

Friends, SevenSeas media has lost funding and is in danger of shutting down. They've been an invaluable resource for me and dozens of my students. If you have used their marine biology career resources, please consider signing this open letter in support. 🧪🦑🌎🐟

Larry Diamond is arguably the world’s foremost expert on democracy and one of the most well-respected members of the Stanford faculty.
Larry is not prone to hysterics; here he brings a sober (and damning) analysis of the state of American democracy.

Happy Treaty of Tlatelolco anniversary! It's been 58 years since Latin America opened for signatures this treaty renouncing nuclear in the region.
My friend and co-author, @dr-mendenhall.bsky.social, got an award today for the organization promoting that treaty, @opanal.bsky.social.
Have you considered getting really into sports betting?
Excited to have URI Associate Professor of Marine Affairs @dr-mendenhall.bsky.social join us tonight at 8:00 pm ET for a discussion around the international politics of deep sea mining.

I'm so happy my work with @dr-mendenhall.bsky.social received this award! I've studied and followed the OPANAL's work for years. Beth and I were very proud of this paper at @iajournal.bsky.social, and receiving this award from OPANAL makes this paper even more special for us! Thanks!
And the winners of the first edition of the Antõnio Augusto Cançado Trindade Award for Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation are @jluisrodriguez.com and @dr-mendenhall.bsky.social with

Word of the day: thalassocracy
"A thalassocracy is a state that has control over the sea and uses it to expand its influence."
I wonder how many Americans understand how dangerous the current moment is.
Trump administration is behaving lawlessly, full stop.
Trump’s public communications are more unhinged than ever before.
They involve constant threats to treaty allies.
So members of the GOP who screamed about Hillary’s emails and Hunter’s laptop don’t care when a right wing extremist without a security clearance accesses our private data and classified government information and downloads things he shouldn’t onto private servers? Who could have guessed?
scapegoating an identity group is Nazi shit. federal employees have been ordered to remove pronouns from their email signatures — how long until those who keep them are fired? purging an identity group from government is Nazi shit.
