I am continuing to wrap my head around the fact that here not just in preschool (which I thought was an anomaly) but apparently in kindergarten too, the teachers are Ms. FirstName and Mr. FirstName and so forth. Even in grad school I never moved past Dr. LastName for any of my interactions.

That time of year in Ohio when you can just lazily spend all day outside enjoying nature :).
That sounds 2x awful :(.
Calling Central Asianists! CFP for the conference “Soviet Central Asia as a Totalitarian Testing Ground” in Warsaw, 15-17 June, is now open. Some travel funding available.
Yes, and yes. I stayed home from school the day that news broke.
One of the coolest things my mom ever did when I was young was to stand in line at 6am at the Albertson’s Ticketmaster outlet to get 7th grade me floor tickets to this, my very first concert ever. $19, unbelievable.
Алға Қазақстан!
Yikes. I’ve watched enough Paw Patrol with my child to have unironically and without advance planning stated that “no job is too big, no pup is too small,” when describing the services my office offers to senior colleagues in a professional meeting.
Even more excitingly, caffeine free Diet Coke, which I haven’t seen around my grocery stores for a really long time!
If you posted here about it, that’s probably how I learned of it!! I can’t remember what put it on my radar.
Georgian Bakery Tiflis in Parma Heights is delicious. 🇬🇪
Little one rediscovered HOT TO GO, so it’ll be a Chappell Roan dance party on today’s drive to Cleveland 🎵🎵🎵
100% recommend Laghman Express in Brooklyn!
My child gnawed off a keycap or two from an old Apple Bluetooth keyboard we had given her at six months or so, and it was only happenstance that I glanced at her to discover them stuffed in her mouth before she attempted to swallow them. YMMV of course.
Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃
We’re enjoying Thanksgiving week on the Oregon coast. No clouds are too grey to keep us away!
What I've been noticing lately in convos with students is that they *despise* the AI-slopification of everything as much or even more than I do. And yet our universities & their admin seem to believe that students for some reason want it integrated into everything. THEY DON'T.
Sad :(.
'SILK MIRAGE: Through the Looking Glass in Uzbekistan' by @joannalillis.bsky.social is out today with @bloomsburybooksuk.bsky.social. It's a brilliantly written account of how the country's two 21st century leaders have shaped the lives of Uzbekistan's fearless, remarkable people. Order it here ⬇️
Ohio this morning. Hello winter!
Only “as bad as” and not “worse”? I feel like for PoliSci anyways, “as bad as” would be good news.
I like when the camera does weird things with the exposure so the bottom looks nearly black and white while the top is awash in color.
Ventana Canyon Trail. Recommended.
Photo through an airplane window of a VERY flat and boring and non-mountainous landscape. Pretty blue sky tho.
“Huh, I expected the Rocky Mountains to be a little rockier than this” @ Denver International Airport.
This is all super helpful! Thank you!
Real question - our little one wants us to plant an apple tree, and I was waiting until spring. Is fall the more appropriate time?
The khinkali and khachapuri look delicious!
Surprisingly, my child made it to level 9 of the game she invented, forced me to play, and didn’t share the rules for, whereas I only made it, apparently, to level 4. 🤷
In @insidehighered.com I explore how area studies have positively reshaped the humanities & social sciences in the US since the 1950s. Their loss would impoverish knowledge production across our universities, and our universities must step up to defend them.

Wow. 20 years ago this month I left Bishkek after two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer and another year working various jobs, to enroll as a graduate student at Indiana University. I’ve been with IU ever since: graduate student, teaching fellow, tenured regional campus faculty, and now staff.
