i said it on ig so i’m gonna say it here too. white & nonblack folks, no matter how well meaning you are, wishing a black person a happy juneteenth won’t sit well for a lot of us. i wanna make it clear that we aren’t a monolith so we won’t all feel the same. while slavery has been outlawed, it still very much exists, just repackaged in the form of mass incarceration, police brutality, and the like. juneteenth is NOT for everyone and that is a hill i will die on. it is for the black folks that built what we have from the ground up. it is for the ancestors that came before us. it is a day of jubilation for us, and us only. part of allyship is knowing when to not center yourself. more often than not, we are an afterthought and only considered when it’s february or our trauma is trending because a black life has been claimed by violence. sundown towns still exist. in 2025, a black woman is seen as an incubator for a fetus rather than her own person. we are still fighting for basic human rights and to preserve our history while the current administration tries to erase it. so if you /think/ that you are an ally, remember that it is more of a verb than a noun. put action behind it. unlearn the deep rooted ingrained anti-black biases you carry. do the work and educate yourself without expecting your hand to be held. show up. support us. elevate black voices.
