Browser plugin that changes every occurrence of “due to war in Middle East” to “due to reliance on fossil fuels”.
“Breathe easy,” the mailer promised. But as we approached Elon Musk’s new xAI data center in Memphis, we were hit with noxious odors, and gas turbines roared like jet engines.
A disgrace. Experts have explained why deer should be a declared pest, that should be controlled & where possible eradicated. This was ignored & deer remain *protected*. Shame on Victorian Labor.
Putting the hunting lobby before agriculture, road safety, & the environment!

Hi everyone -
Do you have to use your car because there is no public transport in your area? Do you have to do mutual obligations right now? Would you feel comfortable chatting for a story? Please message me here or email: cait.kelly@theguardian.com

Can we please move beyond looking for shit to burn? It's so inefficient and it competes with food and biodiversity if tried at scale.

Trend in potential burning hours across North America
Kaiwei Luo's second paper from his PhD thesis is now available in Science Advances. A weakened diurnal weather constraint leads to longer burning hours in North America

Proceeding with the full Western Rail Plan would be a start (while the bus services are brought up to scratch)
A lot of slow learners in the Australian green movement ☹️

If you're being forced to burn through fuel to meet mutual obligations, the guardian would like to chat 👇
Yeah, accessibility issues are most acute on the (east-skewed) tram network, but they do exist elsewhere. And yes, the west is clearly missing out when it comes to services, which the quoted post was more focused on.

Yes, I think they've been royally screwing policy holders for years.
Note the costings assume some revenue uplift to offset the increased operating costs. So it would obviously cost somewhat more if PT was also made free.
I think these are the estimates (or they'll probably be similar):
Train: pbo.vic.gov.au/response/2871
Tram: pbo.vic.gov.au/response/2870
So seems to include some capex for train, but not tram.
Chart of method of travel to work in Victoria in 2016 and 2021 Australian censuses showing car as the overwhelming dominant method of transport and active transport (which free PT often cannibalises) as comparable or larger than the individual PT modes.
Screenshot of table from Australian Bureau of Statistics showing reasons for not using public transport for trip to work, with cost considerations a very low ranking reason compared to service availability.
BTW, I wanted to provide some context for saying lucky "few". Not inconsiderable numbers of people use PT (obviously), particularly at the moment. But look at who isn't using it, and why.
Nobody is safe as long as this man is in office. Impeach now.
This 👇, and I'd also add the persistant need to improve accessibility across the network - low-floor trams, level-access stops, compliant ramps, reliable lifts, etc. Make a network that people can use rather than making it free for a lucky few.
Definitely the latter. So many areas needing better services so that more people can actually use PT instead of relying on their cars.
dramatic evidence here for a key point of the newly-released book MUSKISM: Musk isn't a libertarian trying to live and do business outside of the state, he is a colonizer of the state, bending it to his personal interests

After more than $250 billion in revenue and billions more in subsidies, Tesla has never paid taxes... that's thanks in part to tactics like pretending $18b in profits came from places like Singapore and the Netherlands

Author @gilduran.com was just banned from “free speech absolutist” twitter for criticizing the Palantir CEO’s manifesto— so here’s his upcoming book: www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Ne...
And I s’pose he’s on-board with getting more One Nation MPs into parliament.

“Liberals and Nationals to preference One Nation in blow to Michelle Milthorpe in Farrer byelection.”
It is increasingly difficult to tell the Coalition and One Nation apart, so this makes perfect sense.

People aren't spending several multiples of the cost of PT on cars & spurning PT because fares exist. They're doing it *in spite of* PT being cheaper, because slow, infrequent and poorly integrated services don't cut it. Invest in service quality to shift travel to PT.
