And as Mr. Prokopetz has often discussed, genre is not a checklist, it’s about whether a piece is in conversation with the rest of its genre. Someone could write vore that contains all the elements of Hannibal, and some vore enthusiasts may assert that it counts, but I don’t think Hannibal is vore.
I’ve certainly gotten into some very interesting debates on whether something “counts” as vore not because anyone being eaten as a kink thing is in doubt, but because the genre, styling, themes, imagery, and emotional tone aren’t what most vore enthusiasts would be looking for when seeking “vore.”
Puts my dissertation hat on. I think there’s also an interesting distinction to be made in that “vore” as both a kink and narrative mode is affiliated with specific fandoms and styles of art. A lot of vore is associated with either furry fandom or anime fandoms, or with creators influenced by those.
