75 million working women are holding this economy together. It’s time they have policies that support them. #WorkingWomensBOR @the75million.bsky.social

President Trump’s economic policies have caused widespread economic anxiety among many Americans, but posed the greatest threat to women.

The Trump administration’s attacks on child care funding, reproductive rights, immigrant communities, civil rights, and economic security have caused serious harm to women.

If women’s LFPR in the U.S. was the same as women’s LFPR in Germany and Canada (high-income countries that make substantial investments in family policy), there could be more than $775B in additional economic activity per year. static1.squarespace.com/static/6536b...
Investments in women’s economic security benefit women, their families, their communities, and the economy. #WorkingWomensBillOfRights #WomensRightsAreEconomicRights tcf.org/content/repo...
The #WorkingWomensBillOfRights demands fair pay, safe workplaces, affordable #childcareforall, and #paidleaveforall for working women across the country. When women have these essential supports, we all win.

@lea9223.bsky.social and I have been tracking the states leading the way on making #childcare affordable. Some standouts you might expect:
NY, NM, CT and VT
But it's not only blue states that are making moves. Read on to learn about what IA, TX and AZ have done too:

@kashenj.bsky.social and I write for @msmagazine.com, “Freedom is predicated on the right to full civic participation, bodily autonomy & economic security. While feminists have expanded these freedoms to strengthen democracy, the Trump admin is rolling back progress.” msmagazine.com/2026/03/24/t...
Graphic has The Century Foundation logo at top. Underneath, the text reads, “States Leading On Child Care Affordability As Trump Administration Tries to Take Funds Away.” Below that are the headshots of the report authors, Lea Woods and Julie Kashen. At bottom, the text reads, “The Century Foundation’s new report lays out how seven states across the political spectrum are building toward effective child care policy. Learn more at TCF.org."
My new report with @kashenj.bsky.social shows how seven states—AZ, CT, IA, NM, NY, TX, and VT—are taking steps toward effective child care policy. #FundChildCare @tcfdotorg.bsky.social tcf.org/content/repo...
Never base the entire economic outlook on one report, but this is *not* great. For months, we have been holding our breath watching the labor market get weaker and weaker. It may finally be beginning to break. #jobsday
My love letter / fangirl article with @kashenj.bsky.social about all the hope we see from the heroes in Minnesota. Plus, some Bad Bunny love. As @timothysnyder.bsky.social said: “The moment you set an example, the spell of the status quo is broken, and others will follow.”

“The crisis is that people can’t afford #childcare” Thanks
Senator Kaine!
Lots of consensus in the Senate HELP committee that we need more dollars for child care to serve more children. #childcareforall
@murray.senate.gov is on fire at the Senate HELP committee. Few better champions for solving the child care crisis #childcareforall

Trump's child care funding freeze could spell disaster for families, including $400 million in lost earning for parents, 500,000 children impacted across 44K programs, and 156K+ moms pushed out of the workforce. Learn more at go.tcf.org/ChildCareFreeze
This week, HHS announced it is freezing funding for child care and other family assistance programs in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York.
More than 500,000 children in over 44,000 programs could be impacted, with devastating effects for the economy: go.tcf.org/ChildCareFreeze

“This proposal sets New York on a path to ensure parents can afford great child care, early educators are paid fairly for their essential work, and more high quality options will be available and drive down costs.” – @kashenj.bsky.social
As @repstansbury.bsky.social said in today’s Oversight hearing, the admin’s attacks on child care are part of a larger effort to defund social services.
These attacks make child care more expensive for families, make children less safe, and make it harder for programs to stay open #FundChildCare
Another great conversation w/@momsrising.org @rowefinkbeiner.bsky.social about why care is central to the economic measurements we currently count (ie. GDP) and the ones we should count (ie. family wellbeing). Read more here by @tcfdotorg.bsky.social and @caringacross.org tcf.org/content/repo...
Today I learned that our beloved child care program in NYC, where my son was nurtured and taught by amazing educators, and made his first friends as a 2&3 yo, closed abruptly at the end of last year. The owner couldn't continue to make the math work.
Sometimes the work hits home. #childcareforall
Graph of all U.S. states ranked by the difference in the average price of child care between 2023 and 2024, alongside the annual inflation rate.
NEW: The average cost of child care is $13,000/year nationwide. Costs are rising in all but five states, and rising faster than inflation in 39 states and Washington, D.C.
