Love to everyone who joined yesterday evening for my swearing-in and first reception as our new State Senator; it was the party with friends from every part of my life that dreams are made of.

snaps from some very beautiful, fitting tributes here in New Orleans for a great North Carolinian, American, and Aggie, from some of his closest

North Carolina’s Electoral Future May Hinge on Rural Black Voters Who Feel Ignored by Democrats - Chapelboro.com Roughly 4 in 10 Black voters in North Carolina’s last presidential election said they live in small towns or rural communities.

“In my vision of a Democratic Party, when you talk about reaching out to rural voters, you are talking about rural Black voters.”

Democrats have often failed to mobilize rural Black voters as they try to dent Republican advantages in North Carolina. Via @apnews.com.

I’ve been in that fight. I’ll remain in that fight. And I am honored to have Ellie’s support for the work ahead. 🧵🧵

16 years later, the tide is turning—Sen. Berger’s defeat is a watershed. We need a Senator with the experience, relationships, and strategic vision to negotiate the new environment, who is in the fight for the long haul.

She spoke truth. 16 years later, “Project Redmap” remains the sea in which we as North Carolinians swim. Underfunded public schools. Deeply regressive taxes. Indifference or outright disdain for the “least of these.” Rigged maps and voter suppression.

Ellie, then in her 80s, turned to me and, upset, told me that so, so much of the progress that she and others had fought for over lifetimes would be undone overnight by the new GOP majority, which would then turn around and gerrymander themselves into power.

Election night 2010, I was sitting w her watching election returns. It became clear that the GOP had achieved its objective, riding the racist reaction to the election of Pres Obama and leveraging the Citizens United decision, of seizing control of our NCGA. The plan was called “Project Redmap.”

I learned a lot from her. Forthright and principled, no one would accuse her of being anyone’s Yes-woman. In the Senate, she was a fervent champion of poor and middle-class North Carolinians, and a champion of democracy rights and fair districting—even when it was unpopular with many Democrats.

Ellie ♥️

I’ve told this story a lot. I worked for Senator Kinnaird in the North Carolina Senate after working for the late Rep. Paul Luebke in the House, where he served as finance co-chair. Ellie represented Orange and Chatham, then Orange and Person.. 🧵

From Hillsborough to Cedar Grove to Efland to Mebane to Caldwell, N. Orange is beautiful, and rich in history and culture and community bonds. It has been a joy to build relationships over years with the great leaders in this list, and I’m proud to have their support to be our our next State Senator

Q&A: Garson says he would fight hard, smart for District 23 With last week’s announcement that Graig Meyer would resign from his seat as N.C. Senator serving District 23, which represents Orange, Person and Caswell counties, among the first to step

Grateful for the opportunity to sit down with Dale Edwards and News of Orange
for the long interview excerpted in today’s paper.

Not included: some pretty nerdy discussion about the band The Replacements’s North Carolina connections.

There’s something fitting about the Democratic ex-Gov who tried to sell a US Senate seat meeting the Republican US Senate candidate who tried to rehabilitate a child sex offender into GOP leadership coming together at a place called “The Gaslight Club” at a Chicago airport #ncpol
