I had the complete inverse experience. I leak more often due to the weight of the diaper pulling the leg guards away from my body and causing it to leak. Onesies prevent that. The fabric is still extremely stretchy so it shouldn't hinder it swelling. Maybe too small of a onesie your wearing??
