Illustrated handwritten diary entry that reads: 1/22/25 BRAVE NEW WORLD (AGAIN) I have been feeling more analog lately. Not about everything, but definitely about some things, and I've been calling those in. This [arrows pointing to pictures of people gathering cozily] not this [arrow pointing to a phone].
Illustrated handwritten journal entry showing a drawing of a blue screen on a handheld device, and this text: Actually, analog is not what I mean. Some of the things I've been doing are online, or on a device. And even if not, the devices definitely facilitate. I'm not anti-technology. I'm not even anti-social media. But it's become increasingly clear that a lot of it was designed, and is being continually refined, to jerk us around for someone else's agenda. It's not good for my nervous system. Humans are incredibly adaptable -- but our hardware is old. We weren't built for a 24-hour news cycle, or infinite feeds, or a constant deluge of pictures and feelings and (mis)information. Our bodies, and our ability to pay attention, are wired for other ways.
Illustrated handwritten journal entry with a painting of a water/mountain view seen through trees and brush. Text reads: So I'm trying to get out of digital/internet/attention economy pacing, and back into other rhythms. And just, generally, into my own values and capacity and desires, first -- not anyone else's ideas about how those should work or how I should exist.
I don't know if I like Bluesky yet. And I'm smiling wryly at my choice to make my first post here about trying to divest from the attention economy. But here it is.
Meanwhile, if you're also looking for offline gatherings, my studio-mate and I are hosting regularly (in Oakland)! lu.ma/TheTreehouse
