i was talking about you while eating dinner just now and i said "i don't know that Ryan and I have ever had an authentic conversation because the two of us will both say whatever will piss off the other."

(looks like shit btw)
oh are our text arguments not enough for you?!
Making tenure count, for MSNOW I wrote about my employer, The University of Iowa, creating a center for intellectual freedom. It's a reactionary project built on decades of conservative propaganda about higher ed.
Really cool and interesting work, Jonas! I think I'll assign this one in my addiction class this fall.
"Tongue-in-cheek fancams celebrating Do Not Disturb mode rack up millions of views on TikTok, alongside viral videos calling out users of the feature as rude." Are we as a society okay? I've been on DND nearly 24/7 during the week for a few months and it has been remarkably good for my well being.
I've not engaged with George RR Martin so pardon my ignorance. Is this style what people find appealing about the GoT books? Like ten pages describing a spread of fruit on the table or whatever?
Collaborators for life! ๐
So happy for you! We are already grieving the fact that you're leaving us this summer. ๐ฉ
Very stoked to share that I'm joining Temple University's Clinical Psych PhD program this fall! I'll be doing critically minded and methods-heavy work on measurement, depression, and suicide in adolescents with @olinotom.bsky.social. Feeling super grateful! If you're in Philly, say hi :)
By calling distress about social media an addiction, we are also unintentionally invoking negative biases about addiction ("lazy", "their own fault") that allows companies to be less responsible. So unless we are certain the case is addiction, it may be better to be cautious about saying addiction.
A junior assistant that writes with a very specific (overly concise, vague, and stereotyped) style. If people want to use AI for their own writing, have at it. But the writer asserts a superiority consistent with AI proponents that is completely unnecessary (and not necessarily valid).
Accurate/clear is sufficient, and most published articles would clear this bar but some are often underwhelming. I find myself going back to articles that are written especially well because I am more persuaded by the arguments. IMO writing quality entices scientists to engage with the work more.
yeahhhhh the tone / spirit of this article is veering far too close to manufactured consent for me. I don't use AI in my writing, enjoy writing, and have no plans to use AI. I'm not "telling on myself" because one random dude who likes AI is essentially bully me into feeling bad about that position.
These thoughts accord with my own observations. I'm saddened to see *worse* writing from people who historically wrote well without AI but are using it to increase productivity.
In your experience, what kinds of things signal "obvious use"? I'm curious for a perspective other than my own, but have wondered to myself if folks are being honest when disclosing AI use in publications.
Congrats friend! The recognition is super well deserved.
thank you for holding the space ๐
following your journey has arguably been as much of a roller coaster as this past season
bringing the dialogue to bluesky: a choice
When I know more, I'll get in touch. ๐ In the meantime, congratulations!! And good on you for defending before you head to internship.
๐ ๐ ๐ In an ideal world, VU Clinical will be hiring in a year or two, @claireecusack.bsky.social !
So helpful to hear, thank you so much!! It always seems like there's a needle to thread but it's often confusing. Collaborate, just not too much. Establish independence, but also collaborate so that we know you're well known. Publish, but not so much that we think you don't do quality work. etc...
It's a really confusing thing to navigate. I'd love to be able to collaborate + start new projects as they make sense, but ignoring the advice feels too risky. I appreciate that you're willing to change this norm!
You're right to weigh this problem at a place like Penn. I'm not going up any time soon but have received advice from my dept to essentially stop taking on new collaborations if they would otherwise be a strong letter writer. Anyone I've been on a HiTOP paper with, e.g., is not eligible.
Itโs a terrible and ultimately harmful practice! I didnโt know journals were still requiring them.
Serving on ARM was one of the best training experiences I've ever had. ๐ So sorry, Kevin! You were a fantastic chair!
the Gen Zs in my lab find me impossibly relatable, I just know it
