I have written for the Chronicle several times. They’ve edited my work for clarity, and suggested some organizational changes, but have generally taken a light hand. I believe my work in their pages represents my voice and not that of an abstract administrative overlord.

I like how you utilized that inequality symbol
Barnes and Noble Starbucks are back! One opened in a strip mall near MSU before Christmas and the Starbucks cafe is usually packed with a mix of college students, toddlers, and pensioners. Not sure about the status of chaos theory; will have to ask Claude.
What I like best about the Orioles is how they refuse to score runs.
OK, but we have feudalism in modern day US government!
Does every member of the Trump administration understand the federal government in feudal terms? So long as they pay proper tribute to the king, everyone in their fiefdoms are for them to use personally.
My spouse and I are both doing WFH today. She’s a “hot drink” hound and so I’ve had 2 large mugs of black tea and 2 pour over cups of coffee since 7am.
Currently vibrating.
New, from me: Take the Palantir manifesto seriously, if not literally.
It reveals that our tech philosopher kings want public money, but without public accountability. This creates a dilemma for governments unaligned with its techno-fascist vision. 🧵

WHERE HARPER’S LETTER #2 WHAR
After current sexuality and gender studies majors and graduate students complete their teach-outs, “no degree-culminating student research within the TTU System will be permitted to center on SOGI topics,” the memo states. “Graduate theses and dissertations may only center on SOGI topics as a strictly temporary teach-out exception, explicitly limited to currently enrolled students completing their degrees within formally identified teach-out programs.”
The Texas Tech board and administration established ideological a gag order on what graduate students can study but so many university leaders will still parrot claims about a censorious liberal culture.
Was the reported death of graduate employment premature?
Those prices!
what?
UM: nationalized culture wars
WSU: labor politics
MSU: state Democratic Party insiders
A reasonable proxy for understanding the 3 universities, TBH
Wayne State had an open slot - the Dems put a labor lawyer on the ballot.
MSU had two slots - two establishment incumbents were nominated, beating out a challenger supported by another sitting trustee (part of a long-running intra-board feud).
Jordan Acker, the sitting Democratic Regent pushed off the ballot, was reported to have encouraged the suppression of the protests and to have been a DEI skeptic.
*were arrested
This is a pretty big reputation by the Michigan Democratic Party over the universities handling of the protests.

That’s my hope
I regret that I think I have to read this book. The question is how to do it without buying a copy or getting the university library to buy a copy.
I think its because they are selected for that quality, responsibility of the position lends itself to a conservative affect, and because they mostly interact with each other and other similar elites and index to their peers.
My informed but not definitive assessment is that there are very few college and university presidents or provosts at all institutional types and historical missions who are willing to say the truth about the political and cultural realities facing higher ed in the US.
Saying that states should develop centers and programs that force universities to hire reactionary faculty is like saying that the federal should intervene in elections to stop non-existent fraud.
To be clear, Trump did better in Wayne county in 2020 and better again in 2024 than he did in 2016. This is anti-democratic fuckery. It’s that simple.
Fluffy, black and white dog looking very seriously in it’s something in the distance. Wearing a yellow bandanna with white daisies.
I sit on you and stare out window. I guard.
That’s what I’m getting ready to make now!
Why are preserved lemons so delicious?
