Invisible to telescopic eye
Infinity, the star that would not die
All who dare to cross her course
Are swallowed by a fearsome force
Through the void
To be destroyed
Or is there something more?
Atomized...at the core?
Or through the astral door?
To soar...

I became familiar with this American prog band several years back when I acquired an LP collection that included their second album, Fountains of Light. This was my first time listening to their debut.

Tom Petty had dozens of iconic songs, but the album closer on the debut, "American Girl," might be the most iconic of them all.
Driving down the razor's edge between the past and the future
Turn up the music and smile
Get carried away on the songs and stories of vanished times
Memory drumming at the heart of an English winter
Memories beating at the heart of an African village…

Love hearing some George Thorogood, with that fantastic slide guitar.
Clockwork Angels spread their arms and sing
Synchronized and graceful, they move like living things
Goddesses of Light, of Sea and Sky and Land
Clockwork Angels the people raise their hands
As if to fly
As if to fly…

Talking Heads
Talking Heads: 77 (1977)

Talking Heads were a great band; I always love throwing their albums on. 77 isn't my favorite from them, but it's pretty great.

I love this album. I don't know if it will make my five, but I'm putting it on the shortlist.

Lay down that boogie and play that funky music 'til you die...
It's one of my all-time favorite songs. The album does have another eight songs after "Play That Funky Music." They're all decent, though perhaps unnecessary.
Boston

Eight perfect tracks, primarily created in the Watertown, Massachusetts basement of musical genius Tom Scholz. Couple his playing and production with Brad Delp's pristine vocals and we have one of the greatest debuts in rock history.
I completely agree. All the elements of Prince's genius are present and ready to expand over the upcoming decades.
Boys and girls together
Mistake conceit for pride
Ambition for illusion
Dreams for self-delusion
Girls and boys together
See what it is we lack
Boys and girls together
Let's paint the mirror black
Paint it black…
Happy Thursday everyone 🐰💓
Sammy Hagar
Nine on a Ten Scale (1976)
#5debutalbums7579
It seems like one of Sammy's bands comes up every round. This was his first solo project.
Rainbow
Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (1975)
#5debutalbums7579
Blackmore and Dio collaborate in the first of their three Rainbow albums.
The Police
Outlandos d'Amour (1978)
#5debutalbums7579
All five Police albums were outstanding, although I slightly prefer the first two over the last three.
Peter Gabriel
Peter Gabriel (1977)

Gabriel's first self-titled album following his departure from Genesis.
Foreigner
Foreigner (1977)
#5debutalbums7579
With the release of this album, Foreigner immediately became one of the biggest bands in America, a status that would continue for the next decade.
Journey
Journey (1975)
#5debutalbums7579
Before Journey became arena rock icons, they were a weird little progressive rock band from San Francisco. I enjoy the big albums with Steve Perry, but I really like this first record a lot.
Pat Benatar
In the Heat of the Night (1979)
#5debutalbums7579
One of the great voices in rock, Pat Benatar brought a lot of heat with her first album, featuring one of her signature songs in "Heartbreaker," as well as a great cover of Mellencamp's "I Need a Lover."

Kate Bush
The Kick Inside (1978)
#5debutalbums7579
Kate Bush was a teenager when her debut was released, a major hit in the UK, although it wasn't until '85 that she made an impact on the American charts.
Prince
For You (1978)
#5debutalbums7579
Prince was still a teenager when he played every single instrument on his debut album.
Every day we're standing in a time capsule
Racing down a river from the past
Every day we're standing in a wind tunnel
Facing down the future coming fast
It's just the age
It's just a stage
We disengage
We Turn The Page…

Heart
Dreamboat Annie (1975)
#5debutalbums7579
I'm a fan of Heart's entire career, and their debut is definitely a contender for my top five.
AC/DC
High Voltage (1976)
#5debutalbums7579
AC/DC's international debut is a lock for my top five. What a great rock and roll band, great musicians. It's so wild to think that they showed up in London in the middle of punk, playing the same bills as some of those punk bands.
Yeah, it's great. It won't be my #1, but I think it's a contender for my top five.
Devo
Q. Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! (1978)
#5debutalbums7579
Having been born during this period, I wanted to start my listening with the first album off my list released during my lifetime. The winner was Devo, whose fantastic debut was released in the US when I was five days old.
